About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The media only focuses on the the brilliant women who overachieve in our region, but what the world doesn't see are the many women who are still achievers and who go through so much trial and tribulation to be mothers, sisters, daughter and working women. We dismiss the struggles of social constrains and norms that have made their paths rough. We need to bring attention to these women for all the greatness that they are and help them achieve.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We hold an exibition, that will start to tell stories of the women, the gallery will grow year by year to show images of women around the Middle East and North Africa in actually situations of power and weakness. What we take away initially is that you learn how much a women does to get to where she is recognised by her peers, and also we remind people that like everyone, women have a history that made them who they are. We also take away a book with these images and stories, the money raise from the gallery will give us funds to start micro-financing women in the region. From there the team will follow and film short documentaries about the funds and see how the women have flourished, using that to build an even larger platform.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

One pair of our images is of a women sitting on an steel bed, staring at the wall with hopelessness in her eyes. The following image you see her in a wheelchair with her children around her and a warm smile on her face. This women has suffered great trauma from war and questions herself everyday if she will be able to provide for her family, if she has the ability to care for her children. But, in our second image we see that no matter what struggles she has, she will give everything she has to her children, her world is in them. The outcome of this project is to show people how strong women like these are, and be able to take some stress and pain off their shoulders so that the second image is a constain in their life.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The project is still in idea status as we are developing the 20 different images and stories we want to tell. Each image will tell a story of a struggle and achievement from around the region, covering nations all around the MENA. We hope that through the first exhibition we can raise enough to support 100 women. Of the 100 women we want to assist they will be leaders in helping others. For each women that is helped and given attention we hope they can reach out to 3-5 other women that will allow us to help them. Of the 100 we will help, we hope to film 10 short documentaries. These shorts will help us created a larger platform for the 'Behind the Empowered Women' Campaign allowing us to bring more attention to these women and then hopefully have the project grow more and more

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The project will grown from what will be taken away from it. The first will be a book with the images and stories, that will help funds to grow. From their the short documentaries will be created and promoted at festivals, on the campaign and online. Using all these visuals we hope to create a large social platform that will allow people to learn about the project and as we raise money for the women, funds will go to develop their stories also

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Silatech and Narwi are the two organizations directly addressing the idea of empowering young Arabs in the region. The difference with them and our campaign is that they are targeting all young, Arabs, who have a business idea. We are looking at women, of all ages, who need assistant in achieving their goals, dreams and/or be able to support them so that they can contribute to their community.

Founding Story

I am one of the co-founders of Torath Production, a young production house based in Qatar. We are a team of four strong independent women who were all graduates from Northwestern University. Each of us have brought a different interest and experience into this company, but what really ties us together is that we love film and we truly believe that through our work we can help bring awareness to the Arab region and specifically to women in the region. We might be young but have faced hardships ourselves due to our age and gender, but that has only been the catalyst to producing even more work. While traveling around the region we knew that we had to bring attention to the amazing women we kept meeting and what better way then visually.

Year founded
Impact: What is the impact of the work to date?

Since the project is still in the idea phase, we do not have all the data yet.
We are still developing the full impact of the data and the reach of the project.
But, we are able to reach 100 women per exhibition and be able to documentary part of that group.
Each women from the 100 will get us in contact with 2-3 other women that will help grow the network.
For every partner that will work with us that will create an exhibition we hope to raise funds to help 100 other women.
The more we partner with and the more people who find interest in the project we will be able to help women around the MENA.
This section is still in development and we will focus on it as the project grows.

Barriers: What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

There are two barriers we feel we might face in this project. The first is that the project is starting only in Qatar, and we are scared we will not get the attention it deserves in Qatar alone. What we will do to tackle this is start approaching partners around the Middle East and North Africa and after that internationally. This partners will help hold the exhibition in their respective countries to bring attention to the topic.
Also, Torath Production has a strong presence online and we will use that to promote the campaign online.

Another problem we might face is that if we do not get a large viewership at the exhibition itself.
In case this happens, we will have a website created that will allow people to view the gallery online for a small charge. People will also be able to buy the book and photographs online, this will allow us to still raise money for the project even if people can't physically be at the exhibition.

Full Impact Potential: What are the main spread strategies moving forward? (Please consider geographic spread, policy reform, and independent replication/adoption of the idea or other mechanisms.)

We are going to raise awareness of the project through three main strategies;
1. Creating a website and strong online bases for an international audience
2. Have the physical exhibition set up in Qatar and a few other countries around the MENA region
3. We will be partnering with organizations or individuals to help spread the idea of the project, this will be local, regional and international

Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

To stay financial sustainable we are not only depending on the exhibition. We will be creating a take away book, and photographs that can be bought. This is also be sold online.
The gallery will grow with more and more images, but as we raise funds, documentaries will also start be made of these women. With each documentary, it will have a screener, be screened in festivals and be pay-per-viewed online and on ItunesU.

Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the founder to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

Do what you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life,' those were the words that triggered it all for us.

During our senior year at Northwestern University in Qatar, one of our mentors was spellbound on the idea that we, four young students bursting with passion, were bigger than our own dreams. We had so much more in us, he would say, and urged us not to be locked down by the preset norms of the industry and instead, create our own platform.

He was right, we had a passion. A passion beyond the classroom. A passion to tell the world of the stories from the region, to be proactive about the societies we live in and educate about the untold.

This was our tipping point.

As fate had it, our first feature documentary generated a ray of interest in our work and that became the catalyst to actually dream bigger.

What's most interesting about this dream is that each member comes with a different background, different interests and aspirations.

We plan on telling these stories with our short and feature documentaries, films, photography, and any visual entity that we believe will grasp our audience.

Partnerships: Tell us about your partnerships.

Currently we do not have any partnerships locally or internationally.
We are hoping to partner with Women Organizations, Museums, Student Organizations, Universities and NGOs.
We will start locally with places such as; the Modern Art Museum, Northwestern University, Women Professional Society Network and so on.
For there we will start to work with more people such as Women Deliver, Arab Youth Forums and so on.
