With a background in nursing and particular empathy for the plight of people languishing sick and alone, Mary saw that there were few outlets for the significant numbers of elderly people with energy and interests. Mary is tapping into an underutilized demographic bounty by equipping elderly people to be service providers in social initiatives. Her innovative programs include a national helpline for lonely and depressed elderly that systematically gathers information on the senior citizen population. She has also established complementary programs that employ senior citizens to teach conversational English to new immigrants, another frequently isolated group. She is channeling the learning and experience gathered from these elements into plans for national and international expansion of her work.
