Meghalaya Model -combating human trafficking through a comprehensive framework that engages stakeholders

The Meghalaya model addresses the problem on human trafficking of girls into the sex trade in India. The model recognises that due to its clandestine nature human trafficking can only be combated through a united effort from all stakeholders. The model is a multi-sector approach involving government, law enforcement, judiciary and civil society organisations that creates a comprehensive framework for combating human trafficking under the four “Ps” Prevention, Protection, Policing and Prosecution.

Super Model to Combat Human Trafficking

It is a comprehensive strategy of networking with other relevant agencies, government departments, police, lawyers and national organizations working on human trafficking. Its aim is to trace trafficked women and children in the sex trade, rehabilitate them, repatriate them to their own homes or other facilities, and provide training in skills so they may support themselves. The system identifies traffickers and keeps records in a database. Rescued girls form part of a support group to help other survivors reorient themselves to a different life.

Training Law Enforcement in North East India to Combat Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a major problem in North East (NE) India, though it does not receive much attention from the government or media. Spreading awareness among all stakeholders--from vulnerable populations to policymakers--is a key component of any preventative strategy. However, Impulse noticed that education and awareness was relegated to the NGO sector working on local or statewide levels. Impulse decided to bring these stakeholders together to bring awareness to those who could stop trafficking first-hand: law enforcement agencies.
