About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Though Sri Lanka is promoting tourism as a booming industry, the level of benefits goes to the rural communities are very less and the regional income disparity of the country also very high. We will innovate tour packages with regional specifications and rooted to day to day community activities and livelihoods with the integration of Homestay accommodation. So main income goes directly to the community.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Selected rural families will be developed as registered Homestay providers with the online profile and government approval. They will be registered homestay hosts of ECO Treats Tourism and its partners such as and Lokaltravel Inc USA. Annually 100 Homestay units to be added to the industry. So those families will start to earn sustainable income their living and hospitality. We will integrate all possible adventure and ECO tours with those homestay. Annually USD 1000 to be earned as a minimum income of one family. Approximately total USD 100000 to be earned within a year by those families. This will be a growing industry in Sri Lanka and the for coming three years the political stability also at a very good level.

Founder directors have received awards for their previous entrepreneurial accomplishments and academic achievements. Since this is new not yet received any awards. But we hope within a year we will be able to get an award. Government Ministry appreciated.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Select rural destinations with diverse ecosystems, culture and livelihoods. Select suitable families who has the keen interest to get involve with homestay. Provide them a small loan of USD 1200 to improve the required facilities in their home and train them and register them as legal Homestay units. Tran them on hospitality aspects of homestay. We develop a profile photoes and Images and then sign a contract with them for loan repayment and income generation. Upload their profile at and for international marketing through our affiliate programme with those Homestay giant companies. We develop tour packages and couple Homestay units and market. Its simply sustainable income for those families.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

1. Whole last year we have done all studies and identification of potential partners and tour destinations. Two ECO professionals from Sri lanka and USA/Hong Kong have ventured to form this company. WIthin 1-2 weeks business registration will be received. 2. Ireland and LokalTravel Inc USA partnership received to market our Homestay and ECO tours. 3. total online reservation site has been completed 4. All ECO tour packages have been completed and service providers arranged 6. Homestay units identified and now in the process of developing their standards. For that we need to allocate small loans for most of the families. 7. Homestay and Tour profiles including video and images to be done 8. 26 Sep 2017 World Tourism day business to be commenced and within 12 months 100 homestay units to be developed

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Once after 100 Homestay units developed and profiles published our main strategy and scaling up is to reach 1000 Homestay units in Sri lanka. And then we can partner with several other countries and with their Homestay programmes to initiate joint programmes. This will help 1000 families and indirectly for 5000 other families. Further our target is to establish adventure and ECO sites in each district as medium or large projects with Villa and hotel as the next step. So that will generate more employments for those regions and will be a strength for Homestay families to attract more tourists.
Funding: How is your project financially supported?:
earned income (product or services sales, licensing, franchising, consulting, financing, etc.) - 50%
other - 50%

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Once after initial venture capital for Homestay profile development and Homestay unit development for 25 families. We will revolve that money with a microfinance organization. Accordingly we will generate the money for the sustainability of the programme. Since this is a entreprise and generate income this will be a self sustainable project without any doubt. This will be a great hybrid social enterprise model from Sri lanka to the world

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Right now there is no any other projects address this issue in this approach. Though there are several ecotourism project established they are not linked with international tourism and this kind of registered homestay programme with system and applications and as a business model. This will be an exclusive project with more innovative approach. All the risk factors of the existing solutions are addressed here. ECO Treat is the commercial entity to take care the business aspects of it and community will get involve and develop with the time.

Founding Story

As a Researcher, Consultant and Trainer I have visited all districts in Sri lanka and worked with many rural communities belong to all major ethnicities in Sri lanka. I have worked with UNDP, JICA, ILO, WUSC. World Vision, Caritas, CARE, embassies and many government organization to serve rural communities. I have created much more contacts with those rural communities and I have identified their life challenges as well as their potentials and natural resources. I think community tourism will be a great solution to develop the economic aspects of selected families and those areas with a hybrid (for profit and community) model. After a one year search and exploration I found Scott a different Architect. So with a BIG dream we started this.

Me and Scott are the Co-Founders of this company and we both need to transform tourism industry into community benefited model where we can generate sustainable profits and contribute to regional developments and to achieve several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including zero poverty and reduce inequality and sustainable environment and resource use etc. We have a team of young and talented staff for managing other aspects.
