An Innovative way to Report incidents of Violence against Women, NGO Activities, Crisis Situations through Web/SMS/PhoneApps!

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The high number of female foeticide, infanticide and human trafficking prevalent in India has placed it as the fourth most dangerous place for women in the world, according to a TrustLaw survey. Add to this this the frequent news about dowry deaths and rapes prevalent in the country, we are poised to become The Most Dangerous place for women to be soon. Though Media reports including Citizen Media Reporting might not fully solve the problem as the Problem of Violence Against Women is deep rooted in a society where men have always had the upper hand, It might just be a start to fighting against such a despicable social Evil. Also to be included is to engage Citizens in a two way news reporting service which which will bring people together in times of crisis. With these in mind, i have customized and implemented the famous Ushahidi platform to suit the needs of my endeavor to end Violence Against Women.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The solution is a customization of the Ushahidi Platform. Installing it on a remote webserver. Adding more functionalities to it, like SMS Reporting, Voice IVR Rerpoting, Email Reporting, Twitter reports, integrating with Social Media so that the news reaches out to the masses. Bringing together the ones who need help and the Social Workers and NGOs who are willing to help with resources and time. For me, “Innovation Lies in Simplicity” maps4aid is a simple citizen Reporting Service. The Platform that it runs on has been tested at many levels and is under constant development and available free to Organizations who are working for a social cause. All the tools that i have integrated with this platform also fall under the Open Source category. How does one report to us? 1. By visiting www.maps4aid.com and clicking on the “Submit A Report” Link 2. By Sending an SMS/MMS to the maps4aid Mobile Number available at the site. 3. By tweeting in Twitter with the hashtag #m4aid {Under Testing and Fine Tuning} 4. Ushahidi App for iphone pointing to www.maps4aid.com 5. Ushahidi App for Android pointing to www.maps4aid.com 6. By making a voice call. The call will be picked up by the IVR and the reporter follows the instructions to submit a report. PS: Once the reported is added to the database as a Verified Reporter, the Incident Reported will appear immediately on the website in real time. New Reporters will go through a credibility check and their content will be moderated by the administrator during the initial stages.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Scenario 1: Lets say that maps4aid has teamed up with TrustLaw which is an Organization that provides Legal Representation and Support to Victims of Violence Against Women. TrustLaw Volunteers will be encouraged to enroll themselves with the “Get Alerts” functionality of maps4aid by 1. Visiting www.map4aid.com and clicking on the “Get Alerts” Tab 2. Provide their email address, the category in which they are willing to give their support [e.g Dowry cases, Rape, Abuse, Crime] and their Location with a Radius which will define their accessibility to respond to a particular report/incident. When a new Report is submitted to maps4aid.com which falls under the category and Location set by a TrustLaw volunteer, an email alert is sent to them and they can follow up by using the Comment Section available in each of the reports. If details to contact through phone/email/social networking is provided in the Report, then the Volunteer can contact them immediately and follow up. Scenario 2: A database of helplines, NGOs working in various fields of Social Development is in progress at maps4aid.com . Any one who is interested in finding an organization to volunteer with, can visit maps4aid.com and use the category filters on the right side of the map to locate Organizations on a map and contact them with the details they have provided.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

I think the Scope if very high for what i have in mind. At the end of the day its reporting. And its about the right incidents for the right people at the right place. Challenges right now are web hosting and basic infrastructure because i am basically from a village environment with very slow data connection and a questionable power system.

FOUNDING STORY: We want to hear about your “Aha!” moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution’s potential to change the world.

I came across the Ushahidi platform and FrontLine SMS and wanted to implement something that can have an effect in India especially in Blood Donation, Gender Crime Reporting, NGO Watching. I came up with the idea then and implemented it by tweaking the platform to my needs and promoting it through twitter.

Specify both the depth and scale of your solution’s social impact to date

We have reported about 250 Incidents in the last one month. The data is growing and i have started another blogsite http://www.blogs4aid.com to report events in a more readable format every month. This website will also add as the Publicity Point for maps 4aid in the future.

What is your projected impact within the next 1-5 years? Is your idea replicable? If so, how?

Yes the idea can be replicable by implementing it in other domains. The impact of the project is huge especially in terms of Blood Donation Campaigns, Even Disaster Mapping, I expect a lot of followers once they can access the website in a faster way. Right now its too slow and its putting many people off. shared hosting is also not safe for the data that is accumulating exponentially every day.

What barriers have hindered the success of your project to date? How do you plan to overcome these and other challenges as you grow your solution?

Biggest Problem has been Web Hosting Services and a safe place for the data with SSL Encryption. Though all these are avialable, i have not been able to find the investment. Hence the idea to join this competition. I see challenges in SMS Implementation, partnering with a National Mobile Operator for the SMS Gateway, Sending out Alert SMS through the website fr those who are interested.

How do you see the information-technology and media sectors shifting over the next decade? How will your solution adapt to and/or drive that changing environment?

Both Information Technology and Media sectors will continue to grow exponentially over the next many decades i am sure. My project taps the OpenSource Value of ushahidi Information Technology and the Social Media like twitter, facebook to collect information and report and curate them.

Failure is not always an option. If your solution fails to gain traction in the next two years, what other applications of the idea could you explore?

I am going to work hard to make it work. Right now i am the only person on the project. I hope more volunteers will come up with a faster website and SMS based reporting.

Expand on your selections, explaining how you will sustain funding

I want to ask for external funding after i have set up something commendabe and when the effects are clear to the people who wish to fund. Right now, i am funding it with the money i have.

Tell us about your partnerships

No Partnerships at the moment.

What type of team (staff, volunteers, etc.) will ensure that you achieve the growth milestones identified in the Social Impact section?

I am looking at Youth from different places in India. I want a maps4aid correspondent in Every city. They will be the ambassadors. They will recieve a login to the website and can curate content about their city and publish them and promote their campaigns.
