School networking & trained-up a grassroots citizen journalist group to publish local content on climate change & local issues.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

School networking and train up grassroots youth as responsible and innovative ‘citizen journalist’ who are living in the most vulnerable climate change hotspots of Khulna Division of Bangladesh. The main purpose of initiative is to make an active group of young citizen journalists who will produce quality local contents on climate change as well as local human rights and development issues. Project’s goal is strengthening the grassroots voice of climate victims in global stage that create a favorable environment for climate justice through the grassroots climate hearing in online. For accomplish the project goal, first I need to arrange a 4 days F2F ( face to face ) training workshop. I need seed fund for workshop arrangement, venue, promotional and learning material publishing and logistic cost, etc. However an official community site/ blog with own branding, training and citizen media tools are necessary. My target to train 20-25 trained citizen journalists who will be selected from the local school and college with open and online circular. Such way the training and campaign will cover 1+ million people who directly effected by climate change specially by SIDR and Aila.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The training on effective use of citizen media will cover the user friendly techniques and tips. However it will include basic techniques of photography, videography, writing for web both in English and local Bengali language in Unicode. However it will give a clear scenario on evolution of Internet, Citizen Media, however the power of social media, interactivity, contemporary trends for encouraging the participants. Along with two F2F ( face to face ) workshop, one online workshop will be arranged. However as a training facilitator I will give life-long free training by using cell-phone, GTalk, Skpe, E-mail etc ICTs as extended learning ( e-learning ). As a part of training, as practical output the participants/students producing a series of local contents, video, audio, blog posting as local voice on climate change. The youths will gain a journalistic educational ground, awareness and confidence that will enable them to be responsible media practitioners in near future to proliferate the grassroots voice. All the local video contents will be uploaded online from the spots with wireless/ mobile internet. After that a local “mini video festivals” will be arranged for making public awareness on climate change and for publicity of citizen media and global information system in grassroots levels. Primarily the World will inform the Climate Change reality both suffering and adaptation of Bangladesh by the local content of citizen journalist. In a well a space will create for climate justice and climate negotiation for compensation.

Social Impact
FOUNDING STORY: We want to hear about your “Aha!” moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution’s potential to change the world.

"Unity Saving the People" focusing the motto, this is true information sharing and communication follow the prime role for making real unity between and among the people, communities. Through the citizen journalism nowadays the social media become the most powerful media of this Era. However the information sharing easily can connect, involve and inspire the people. With the vision to change and contributing to the development process since 2001 the founder is working the local content production, online journalism, training however educating on and via ICTs and new media.

Knowing the Bangladesh story Bangladesh may will get sympathy and or compensation for global partners. However the world will get benefits from climate change adaptations' success stories.

Specify both the depth and scale of your solution’s social impact to date

I have chosen the issue of climate change as Bangladesh has been identified as the most vulnerable country for the climate change. Both poor and rich, privilege and unprivileged, north and south all are marginalized in the perspective of climate change. Particularly, the grassroots poor of Southern coastal are seriously affected. Because of extensive local and global media coverage, the issues are addressed in the policy, research and leadership level. But the grassroots voice and the community reality have been ignored both in the media and during policy making. The crude reality, the victims’ stories and suggestions as well as the voice of victims are unreported and unheard. Moreover, the victims do not know the causes of climate change. Along with illiteracy, subjective leadership and hard core poverty, they don’t have interest and awareness in the issues. However with the prejudice the victims’ community believes the continuous attack of storm, flood and unexpected environmental hazards are the curses of nature.

What is your projected impact within the next 1-5 years? Is your idea replicable? If so, how?

The mainstream media also focus the traditional views monotonous with priority to the subjective media presentation. This is the time to explore the stories of the victims, and strengthen the voice of the victims in global stage with the help of the local people and representatives. I would like to choose youth journalist as they have interest about new media, new approach with creativity. I believe, the content and video as “ the voice of victims” would later affect in policy and development actions. The contents will be used as “Open Video Content ” for climate change campaign and advocacy. However by this initiative a favorable environment will create for climate justice, climate negotiation through the climate hearing from the spots.
