It is the media that provides the country with positive and constructive information with a citizen and development approach.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Internet is considered an alternative to traditional media; however, the information needs to be systemized in order to achieve greater impact and implications In most cases, traditional media provides coverage to “sensationalist” news and ignore positive initiative and productions because these are considered “unimportant”. Our goal is to promote citizen participation, the right to information, freedom of speech and the support to artistic and cultural expressions from a citizen perspective, using a positive approach to news or information to be offered. Ahora Bolivia website is addressed to Bolivians who live in the country or abroad, and who seek information and at the same time are potential journalists that can share their stories.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Ahora Bolivia, the first citizen digital newspaper from Bolivia, provides citizens with the opportunity to access a highly visited and Seo friendly site, to spread articles and news with a proactive and development approach. Ahora Bolivia is a news media focused on the promotion of citizen journalism as a tool for citizen empowerment. By providing citizens with the opportunity of becoming editors and collaborators, promoting culture in all its expression and spreading alternative news and information compared to the information included in the agendas of traditional social media in Bolivia. Ahora Bolivia is the media that concentrates on the good things of Bolivia.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The portal is open to the free registration of users, each citizen is a potential source of information; a powerful communication tool is made available to users. At the same time, there is a robust network of collaboration and generation of information on cultural, artistic, social and development aspects which not only allows the continuous provision of fresh and positive information but also encourages other organizations that also aim at changing the world.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Digital media and/or traditional media in the web. The difference is marked when changing the approach to the piece of news, by showing the good and positive things happening within the country. In Bolivia, everyday there are new creations and buildings and this is something that is not displayed in the traditional media or other digital media many times.

FOUNDING STORY: We want to hear about your “Aha!” moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution’s potential to change the world.

Ahora Bolivia was born in December 2007 as result of an initiative from Sebastian Molina and Rosa Jiménez Cano in the journalistic field and Stalunati in the technical and design role. The portal was created in a moment marked by high tension and political polarity in Bolivia, when positive and proactive information with a development vision was highly required.
That is the reason why “Ahora Bolivia the media that concentrates on the good things of Bolivia” was born, within the aim if listening to the voices of the citizen building the new Bolivia, a media with a vision based on construction and not in confrontation. Free voices committed with the freedom. Voices that believe in the unity of a country rich in resources and culture.
The intention is to raise the self esteem of a country that will influence citizens positively. A country submerged in crisis only generates confusion. A country where there is an intention to move forward and show positive and constructive facts is a country that grows and makes their neighbors grow.

Specify both the depth and scale of your solution’s social impact to date

Thanks to Ahora Bolivia, over half million people have been benefited by receiving relevant information that promotes a peace building culture, dissemination about human rights issues, promotion of cultural and art events and initiatives, as well as the participation in economic development actions such as productive, tourist and cultural fairs and several campaigns focused on the common good.
Initiative and campaigns spread and support by Ahora Bolivia, such as “A Goal for a Smile” (wining initiative in 2010 Changemakers challenge) Coexist Seed of Peace (campaign aimed at a peace culture supported by the United Nations in Bolivia) Misiones Project (Jesuitical Mission in Bolivia, worldwide destination) among others, have been successful initiative and have been acknowledged by public institutions (town halls, municipalities) as well as by private and civil institutions, thus generating an impact, public opinion flows and social mobilization.

What is your projected impact within the next 1-5 years? Is your idea replicable? If so, how?

The impact within 2 years is to position at large scale as “the media focused on good thinks in Bolivia” being a leader in the generation of positive opinion and a reference name in terms of decision making processes in political, social and civil issues regarding citizen participation, tourism, culture and development.
This idea can be applied in other countries and out vision, once the impact planned within 2 years, is to develop Project similar to Ahora Bolivia in other countries, within the aim of promoting development and good news in the whole continent.

What barriers have hindered the success of your project to date? How do you plan to overcome these and other challenges as you grow your solution?

A barrier that we face is the fact that in Bolivia there is a high rate of digital analphabetism
Another barrier is the low level of connectivity in rural areas.
We face both barriers by supporting the Digital Analphabetism program and Technological Cooperation program promoted by CEPAD Bolivia (Center for participation and sustainable human development)
Also, we are members of the Ibero-American Technological Cooperation network which develops educational and didactic material for digital alphabetization that are delivered to public and private actors in different provinces in Bolivia.
On the other hand, we promote the first committee of institutions driving digital initiative in Santa Cruz.

How do you see the information-technology and media sectors shifting over the next decade? How will your solution adapt to and/or drive that changing environment?

We are active stakeholders of these changes. Ahora Bolivia leads the trend and can be accessed through mobile phones and allows the replication of information in social tools such as twitter and facebook, Google+, youtube, LinkedIn, among others.
Since we are on the cutting edge of digital tools, changes and improvement are not only welcomed by Ahora Bolivia but these are enthusiastically spread by us.

Failure is not always an option. If your solution fails to gain traction in the next two years, what other applications of the idea could you explore?

Failure is not a possibility. Thanks to our sustained work, we have verified the importance of spreading our country’s citizen, cultural and artistic and social initiatives, supporting the creation a better future and growing in parallel to our networks, which implies the continuous update and strengthening of the tool.
