About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Innopinion enables the people to leverage the true wisdom of crowds by engaging all participants individually with motivational tasks to contribute to individual needs. It could be about general problems and asking people to contribute with their ideas, supporting potential business ideas to be developed into market-driven products and services, or engaging an online community time and place independently to help solve the local issues.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Innopinion engages people with personalized and gamified tasks to give ideas, identify problems, and analyze all content with peer-evaluation method. The method is not open innovation, but giving people individual questions and tasks, using the community as resource effectively as possible to analyze all content. The solution helps avoid common open innovation problems; fan/friend/follower effect, "loudness" & activity of few, and status-based evaluation, and is as neutral and democratic as possible in analyzing the content - based on smart algorithms that help distribute the tasks to the community. The distribution is done by emails and web portal, and in the near future also mobile applications. Web and emails are optimized for mobile use
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

In our campaign in Sweden we engaged a large number of people to innovate new elderly care services for potentially national use. The community was engaged via personalized and gamified tasks that were distributed to then via email and web. As a result the no. of people attending the ideation process was 40% greater than expected and the no. of ideas was 330% higher than expected. The best ideas are reported with actionable results to local healthcare authorities. People were activated to present ideas, evaluate each others' ideas, to invite more participants, and promote the campaign in social media. All activities are rewarded with virtual credits, and the most active win small weekly prizes, overall top 3 got a chance to win main prize.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The participants are activated to think out of the box for new kinds of ways to do their work better and how to improve the lives of their patients as well as their own working environment. While in the process, they are asked to evaluate each other's ideas, which helps them realize and cross-breed new ideas and understand their working environment and its problems as well as solutions much better. The result is not just a number of new ideas that are well tested and developed, but all participants become more aware of their actions and the surrounding world as described before. The ideas that are evaluated best are potentially creating significant change in how elderly care is developed in the future. The cause and target for which Innopinion is used define the significance to the world, the cause varies in each case, we provide the tool to help solve the chosen issue.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The cause and target for which Innopinion is used define the significance of the outcome to the world, the causes vary in each case. Innopinion is the provider of the tool to help solve the chosen problem. The participating community does the work, we just enable it to be engaged as efficiently as possible for the bets possible outcome. The report how the community and the results are presented is such, that the decision maker has is very easy to decide which idea(s) to execute and why!

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Innopinion is self-funded and is making a slightly positive financial result already for 2013, and thus the company is in good financial standing. We will be looking for venture capital in 2014, with already a couple of angel investors committed to the upcoming funding round, that is used to expand the operation for wider International audiences. As the VC funding is expensive for us, we are looking for other financial support also.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are several open innovation and market survey platforms that enable solving similar and in some cases the same problems, but those have major flaws. The fan-friend-follower effect is one of the most common problems, as are issues related to idea theft. With market research platforms the process is often manual and thus costly, and none of them allow people to express their problems, ideas and feedback freely, but only within very strict pre-considered answers and assumptions. The feedback from the 20+ commercial pilots run so far has proven our value propositions right.

Founding Story

The idea of Innopinion was born during a non-profit operation, a unique online business idea competition launched in 2010 in Finland. It allows startups to test their business ideas in a competition mode with short pitch videos, and anyone could join the evaluation of ideas from various aspects, based on small evaluation tasks given to the public. The crowd votes for the finalists and a large International Jury of various professionals and investors (each individually) evaluate the finalists based on the video an a confidential slideset explaining the more confidential details behind the idea. The backbone technology was handmade from the scratch and raised major interest Internationally. Innopinion was launched soon after

Full Impact Potential: What are the main spread strategies moving forward? (Please consider geographic spread, policy reform, and independent replication/adoption of the idea or other mechanisms.)

Innopinion's platform has already been used for sustainable development, healthcare in hospitals, elderly care services for national level, for startup businesses, to enable developing country entrepreneurs to build more and better businesses with peer support, etc. The sky is the limit to what social innovation, crowdsourcing and the community effort can achieve, it's more of a matter of will and execution. Innopinion's campaigns change world one campaign at a time!

Barriers: What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

The idea has been executed and tested in various business cases and with paying customers. The barrier for success may be the small size of the team and its ability to scale the sales. Thus we are planning to introduce a reseller model where anyone could become a reseller. The threat that we see most potential, is the threat of being bought out early on, or that Google or similar major player conquers the market with their solution, and we don't have the muscles to scale up quickly enough. Also paten trolls are a potential threat, but we plan to patent parts of our solution in the near future.

Partnerships: Tell us about your partnerships.

Innopinion is partnering with several types of organisations; innovation consultants (e.g. Futuretournaments), NGOs/non-profit/charities (e.g. Swedish Care International, World NGO Day), and are hoping to build a partnering model for various organisations supporting social innovation, thus Changemakers are of great interest to us. We are building a reseller model where anyone could become a sales partner, to be launched spring of 2014.

Closing the Loop
How does your project primarily ensure that feedback delivers results?

Help funders, governments, and other organizations to listen to and act on feedback.

Please elaborate on your answer to the above question.

The theme of each Innopinion campaign sets the rules of engagement and motivation to participate. Some campaigns are open & public for anyone to attend, some are internal or invitation only, and some have both options. This is part of the general settings of a campaign. Campaignwise people may report problems & potential solutions, new ideas, or feedback related to existing ideas, services or products. Innopinion tries to understand who the attendees are by asking them simple questions and giving a possibility to fill out a basic profile, which can be used as basis to target tasks evenly.

Languages: In what languages are you able to read and write fluently?

2nd Round Questions
Thinking about your feedback loop; what information are you trying to get from whom, to whom, and to bring about what change?

We wish to investigate the possibility to collaborate with other organisations building upon the possibility to engage people into asking for and giving feedback that can be used to further develop and solve the issues at hand. Furthermore we are eagerly waiting for feedback how our platform could be used in new ways to enable the feedback loops that create new solutions and opportunities to help the developing markets and/or solve third world problems.

What is the purpose of your feedback loop?

If other, please specify

Enable identifying and prioritizing most significant problems, identify solutions, enable engaging people to co-create

What mediums or mechanisms do you use to collect feedback? (check all that apply)

SMS, Phone or voice, Website, Other.

If other, please specify

Could you briefly describe the way you collect the feedback?

Innopinion uses a web portal to collect all information to a single instance (web and mobile optimized), emails to activate people to contribute, and we're currently building mobile applications to further increase the engagement options.

What mechanisms are in place to protect people from retribution?

Option to provide feedback anonymously

If other, please specify

All contributions are anonymized, and all content is peer-evaluated to confirm and prioritize all findings.

What are the immediate benefits or incentives for people to provide feedback?

If other, please specify

People are rewarded for all their contributions with virtual rewards which at certain stage are turned to real-life prizes

How do you ensure new and marginalized voices are heard?

If other, please specify

The process guarantees neutral and democratic evaluation of all content, all feedback is equally tested with other participants

What are the incentives for the intended recipient to act on the feedback?

If other, please specify

Everyone get a personal report on how their ideas/feedback were evaluated and developed, full report available for admin.

How does the feedback mechanism close the loop with those who provided feedback in the first place?

Reports on collected information

If other, please specify

Everyone get a personal report on how their ideas/feedback were evaluated and developed, full report available for admin.

How is feedback published/transparent?

If other, please specify

Available via email, html report, printed report also available with analysis

Give two concrete examples of how feedback loops have brought a program or policy more in line with citizens’ desires.

In Sweden the Swedish Care International used Innopinion to find, evaluate and develop new elderly care services, innovated by nursing students. The best ideas were taken further by collaboration partners and the winning idea is guaranteed to be executed for anyone to use.

With World NGO Day initiative the campaign is about collecting and evaluating ideas how to increase awareness of NGO sector's activities, and no matter how the campaign ends up, the process itself engages participants to invite new people and promote the campaign in social media. So the campaign itself already helps raise the awareness, but also the results are being used to benefit the aim of the campaign. So this is both a viral marketing and awareness raising as much as it is about finding new solutions and testing the potential of those.

If there was one thing you could change to increase the impact of your feedback loop, what would it be?

So far the campaigns are being set up manually and offered as a service, we're building a self-service and value-adding reseller model where anyone could start running their own campaigns. The translations of content to each potential customer case require a lot of manual work and input, and as such we are all the time trying to find more scalable ways to do the translations. Real-time translations are extremely hard to come by.

What are your biggest challenges or barriers in “closing the feedback loop”?

If other, please specify

In some cases people are getting the wrong idea how to use Innopinion, the lack of self-help material is problematic.

Are you aware of The Feedback Store?

No, but I would like to be on it

What are the main uses you can envision for the Feedback Store?

We would like to be offering our service at Feedback Store

What is the one thing you would most like to see changed to improve the competition process?

More peer-evaluation and community engagement, perhaps Innopinion could be used to test the ideas with both general public as well as with globally available experts.

What are you doing to make sure that feedback providers know that they are empowered by the information they can give and that they know exactly what the information they are providing?

Participants can at any time and any phase of the process get a timely full report of all the feedback their own ideas/feedback have gotten, just by a click of a button. The more people contribute, the more statistics and content they are shown.
