About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

As you read this a patient may be critically ill. Whether he lives or dies depends on whether a unit of blood of the right type is available . India is always facing a shortage of blood . People have to run from pillar to post for a unit of blood in their own city or some another city where they go for treatement. At times a patient dies for want of blood. There are unscrupolous elements who sell blood for money.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Indianblooddonors.com is a SMS, IVRS and now a Mobile App (Android and Windows ) based helpline which helps connect needy patients with Voluntory Blood Donors all over the Country.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Patients sufferning from Cancer come to Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai for treatment. When they come for treatment they have nobody to help them in Mumbai get blood donors. They use our IVRS , SMS and now Mobile App based helpline get blood donors for their treatement.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We have 55,000 Blood Donors Registered from All over India. About 10-15 new blood donors sign up everyday. We serve about 1800+ request for blood every month . The search for blood donors come through SMS, IVRS and Mobile Apps.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

WE have a very Sustainable plan in Place. Our IVRS and SMS helplines are completely sustainable. We have ties up with www.awaaz.de our IVRS partner. And www.innoz.com and www.txtbrowser.com who are our sms partner. The mobile apps are developed by 2 companies . Our Windows App has been made by Microsoft India .

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are a few websites addressing the problem but only through the internet. They have not used SMS , IVRS and Mobile app based technology. We have reached the Grassroots through IVRS and SMS technology.

Founding Story

This Doctor has killed my wife ! It was the month of September 1994, my grandmother had a fall and went into coma. She was admitted into Indira Gandhi Medical College, Nagpur. One day at about 3.30 in the morning, there was a huge commotion in the female ward. Relatives of a patient were bashing up the resident doctor in the ward. On enquering from one of them he told me "he has killed my wife". I asked the doctor as to what had happened. He told me that he had asked the patients relatives to arrange for 2 units of blood as the lady's Heamoglobin count was very low. They could not arrange for donors and hence the transfusion could not be done and the patient passed away due to a cardiac arrest. This incident left a huge impact on me.

Closing the Loop
How does your project primarily ensure that feedback delivers results?

Create an environment where people give feedback freely.

Please elaborate on your answer to the above question.

Feedback is a very important component of our system.Feedback from our Vol Blood Donors and from the Patients or their relatives who are using the Helpline.Out Blood Donor database has to be accurate and correct to ensure that Patients get connected to willing and voluntary Blood donors. We need that information of the Blood Donors eg Mobile number and City information has to be correct. We get feedback from Donors if they are donating blood to the patients (Yes or No) and if they are active blood donors. We get Feedback from the patient if the Donors has Consented to donate blood etc.

Languages: In what languages are you able to read and write fluently?

2nd Round Questions
Thinking about your feedback loop; what information are you trying to get from whom, to whom, and to bring about what change?

The most important part of Indianblooddonors.com is our database of blood donors and also the Patients who use the helpline via SMS , IVRS, and Mobile Apps . First we need feedback as to among these 3 which is being widely used so that we can innovate and upgrade that system. As of today our Usage is more on Android App and IVRS. This information is derived via a WEB APIs for each of these system.

2. Our Blood Donors are another very important Part of the system. We wish to know the History of Every Blood Donor . How many times has he consented to donate blood, how many times has he refused to donate blood. Is his phone number right etc. We have about 10 types of Feedback in our mobile App. This feedback comes from the Patients who contact the Blood Donors. Feedback about the Donor helps us decide if the Donor should be kept in the database or not. Is he a Valuable Donor . We dont wish to have a database of committed donors. Its no use have a large number of donor and they dont go out and donate.

We also take a feedback from the Donors if they are donating blood to the patient or not.

This entire excercise helps us keep an updated database of willing voluntory blood donors.
