About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

There are many good ideas out there. Some of these ideas could even disrupt society and make great changes possible: changes towards collaboration, sustainability and leaving more positive environmental and social impact. But how many of these ideas escape from the brain-space and make it into reality? Too few! People are sometimes too shy and protective of their ideas, or sometimes they don't have the time, money or space to try it out...

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

No more! At Biji Biji, we run an Open Workshop. Here, we have tools and expertise available for members of the public to explore. We also have a collection of waste materials which we have salvaged from around the city- as our mission is to raise awareness about the urban waste problem! With our pillars of sustainability and collaboration, we encourage everyone to explore their ideas and to try and turn them into reality with our help where needed. We strongly believe that two ideas are better than one, and that with a little help from our friends, we can solve many problems together while leaving a great positive impact on the environment!
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

From a team of four, we now proudly employ up to 50 people during projects

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We have reduced the waste in our community and city, collaborated with 23 other community organisations, and we support the local economy by buying from local suppliers only.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We'd like to move to education: conducting workshops throughout the country. This way we can empower people to start their own makers communities or initiatives which will greater bigger social and environmental impact.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

As well as promoting sustainable living through our Open Workshop, we also offer custom workshops, upcycled products and art installations to our clients. These engagements help us to spread the message further while covering our expenses and allowing us to invest in any additional tools.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are some NGOs and government agencies addressing the issue of urban waste, and we will do anything in our power to support them in achieving their goals. For example, the government is launching separated waste collection next year and we'd love to see this be a raving success! Other organisations who offer similar products or services as us as seen as collaborators, not competitors. Our collaborative and inclusive model means that we try to work together with as many parties as possible, as this will only allow our impact to grow!

Founding Story

We were all living together- and after work we would come home and talk about the happening of the day, politics, the economy, the world's problems and its solutions. After some time, we realised we were doing just that- talking. And many people were talking with us. We starting to imagine the effect it would have, if all these talkers became doers. That's when we decided to make that first move.

We are a team of 4 founders, and today our core team consists of 10 full-time members. For big project and campaigns, we can grow up to 50 people working on a project at any one time. The founders have background in: - Accounting & Finance - Community Development - Physics - Literature Our full team mixes together a really diverse set of talents, which allows us to solve many problems and build almost anything!
