About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The idea addresses the following problems in developing markets: 1. High environmental pollution due to large amount of fruit and vegetable waste disposal. 2. High livestock and poultry feed scarcity BUT increase of the need for livestock products. 3. Low quality, quantity and varieties productions of feeds BUT high price and unaffordable by smallholder farmers in Ethiopia .

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Our business plan can give the following solutions for the problems indicated. 1. Reduces the environmental pollution effects due to the fruit and Vegetable waste disposals. 2. Try to provide an alternative livestock and poultry feed in the market and agriculture sectors which has critical relevance in Ethiopian feed scarcity. 3. Create jobs for poor community in urban and semi urban areas in Ethiopia. 4. provide high quality feedlots and alleviate animal feed quality problem in Ethiopia. We do these by collecting fruit and vegetable waste from distributors, retailers and producers and then, with the maximum requirement of standard feed nutrients, grinding, mixing, heating, drying and improving to produce quality alternative feeds.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

To realize the business with is maximum impacts on the targets, two major schemes are planed. 1) The waste collecting workforce scheme that is designed to collect technically selected fruit and vegetable waste. individuals or group of individuals mostly from low income and jobless people can take the work on contractual basis to collect and transport wastes to the processing plant. These creates job for low income and jobless people, reduce the environmental hazard that would be arisen otherwise. 2) The second scheme is the processing in which the wastes are translated to value added product. Smallholder farmers, cooperatives and others that participated in livestock farming can feed their cattle, sheep, poultry properly, cheaply, easily.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are many feed sources in Ethiopia. But when compared with the current need and the projected need, it is far lagging. there are many flour mill by products, oil mill byproducts, brewery, winery and sugar factory byproducts, both govt and private owned, in the country. There are also few feed processing plants (five in number and limited in production because of different problems) in the country that produce concentrate feeds. But all these are covering 46-56% of the country needs. Our product is made from Wastes with minimum cost (labor), no double taxation, high nutrition, low price.

Your Solution
Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

I have come across and heard large consumption of fruit in my city Addis Ababa Juice houses and fruit sellers and huge disposal of their byproducts. these wastes are disposed in to landfills intern harms the environment. on the other hand, I so many times hear the shortage of animal feed, low quality of feed and as a result low quality small quantity of livestock products. The government of Ethiopia planed to increase the livestock product country and export market by 4 and 5 (2010 as a base) fold in 2015. The dairy and meat consumption of Ethiopian people is very far behind from the WHO human nutrition requirement I know. These two oppositely falling facts ignite my previously built business doing attitude and motives and so I get started.

Select Sector(s): To which of Unilever's categories of sustainability does your solution apply?

Nutrition, Waste, Sustainable Agriculture, Smallholder Farmers.

Measurable Impact
Audience: Who have you identified as your customers/recipients and why? How will you get your solution to them or engage them in your initiative?

Our customers can be categorized in to two. Those who are fruit and vegetable waste producers and people who need to collect and transport the waste to our plant on one category and those that engaged in dairy and meat productions such as smallholder farmers, cooperative associations, small scale private livestock and poultry farms that need our feed product as alternative or as supplement with other feed sources are our potential customers, both need us seriously for their own critical advantages.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date and expected impact in the future?

Our pilot survey has shown us the fruit and vegetable waste is a headache for the fruit and vegetable distributors, retailers, juicers, the A.A. City administration. The 'gold' waste is becoming waste. The waste is polluting the environment. On the other hand, smallholder dairy and meat fattening farmers, cooperatives, small scale livestock and poultry farms are with scarcity and nonavailability of feeds in quality and quantity. Govt of Ethiopia planed to increase livestock products. Fruit and Vegetable wastes will be properly collected, processed and value added thereby their environmental impact reduced. Livestock farmers', private livestock and poultry farms' abattoirs' worry for enough quality feeds will be resolved hence they become productive; Govt's plan will meet. Therefore, our project have high future impact by alleviating all above contradictions to some considerable extent.

Growth, Finance & Leadership
Scaling the Solution: How do you intend to scale your activities over the next two years (e.g., reach new markets, diversify solutions, etc.)? What will make this possible?

We ill start with 100 Qt/day production capacity. We will produce three broad varies of feeds for dairy, meat and poultry groups. We focus on quality. The Addis Ababa City has the capacity to produce above 250 tons of Fruit and Vegetable wastes per day. We planed to increase the production capacity yearly 100%. Because there is huge market need and raw material resource, it is pretty easy to production capacity, product quality, variety and quantity. In countrysides close vicinity of addis ababa, there is large amount of dairy farming farmers and cooperative associations who need to increase there products in the future. They need high feeds alternatives. Abattoirs and quarantines are expanding and increasing in numbers.

Financial Sustainability: What is your business model to ensure financial sustainability?

We purchase the waste with low cost. The purchasing, operational, distribution and other cost will be around $10 a Qt. With maximum production and distribution capacity, $400,000.00 sale a year leads us to more or less financially sustainable with in 1 and half year. Our business firm try to facilitate transportation and distribution to close to customers. Efficient manpower, machinery, technology, resource & marketing management implemented.
