Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Lands of Hope is intended to improve lives, primarily of women in rural areas. By providing each of them a micro plot of land to grow food they will be able to insure their daily spending, cater their needs and those of their families.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In senegal, poverty and misery define the daily life of the major population mostly in the rural area. Indeed 50.6% of the population live in extreme poverty. 6 out of 10 are cultivators but despite average harvests, they live with less than 1$ a day. So without revenue and resources most of them migrate with their children to the city for begging and this leads to overcrowding and many other consequences in Dakar.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

As much as micro gardening is a promising sector in senegal this project as solution will have a significant impact in the way of living of these population. Indeed it will improve their quality of life and they will be able to send their children to school giving them a new future. There are many land in these areas and because of a lack of resources and support, populations don't exploit them. So by arranging micro plots of land and providing them seeds, fertilizers and water they will be able to grow food for their own consumption or sell them in order to have income. This project will help to reduce poverty while tackling the issues of food security.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

There was a widow, Fatou, living with her 4 children in a small village. She was left with nothing after her husband's death. She was really desperate. When we heard about it through one of her relatives we proposed her to contact the person in charge of land allocation in this area. There were some lands in these areas, about hundreds of hectares but they were unexploited. So after many procedures, she received a micro plot of land just 5 acres. She planted vegetables to provide nutrition and income . And now she passed from jobless to a land owner, from starved to food secured. With her generated income, she sent her 4 children to school. So just imagine the impact of such achievements deployed by a hundreds of women.
Sustainability

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We started this project with a group of 300 women living in a village named Saare Mawnde. Their village is located in the region of Fouta and is composed of 1,500 inhabitants. These women walk 10 km every day to pick “jujubes” and “Balanites aegyptiaca” in order to sell them at the weekly market at a profit not more than 4$. The Federation of Association for Fouta's Development (FAFD) helped them but we don't have the same vision

Idea
Founding Story: What inspired your venture? Why?

A native of this village who is a member of the team told us one day that many women leave the village with their children to come to Dakar. Most attempts to find a job, but ends up in prostitution or begging in the streets. So I thought, since there a lot of idle land over there why not revitalize agriculture while providing work for these women? They will no longer need to come to the capital nor beg to meet their needs.

Goals
What do you want to accomplish in your first year?

We started this project in the beginning of the year. These women had already one unexploited hectare land provided by the FAFD. So we rehabilitated the gardening area to optimize the use of space and increase productivity through the introduction of micro-gardening and we provided them a training on gardening techniques and management of an associative group. Also we acquired 400 feet of fruit trees from the Directorate of Water and Forests. So in the first year we want them to be financially indepedant, environmentally aware while being sufficiently supplied with water.

Impact
How will your Venture define success in the short term (1-12 months)?

We will set up a planning regarding the goals that we will follow. We will have to reach the 3 goals set up in the previous section.

In the long-term (1-3 years)?

In the long terme, these women's income have to increase significantly (about 50%). Also we will measure their capacity to be autonomous and run their own business by reinvesting their gain in next crops campaigns.

How will you measure success?

We will measure success by giving questionnaires to our partners and target in order to know what they think about the achievements. Also we will measure their agricultural growth, the social and environmental impact so that we can know if their agricultural system is fulfilling nutrition needs, health, environmental sustainability, rural development and other needs of the population.

Sustainability
How will you recruit new members for your venture?

For this target we are a team of 10 students from 2nd year bachelor to master degree. As we want to deploy this project in another village we will organize awareness days in school. Show them our achievements and how young students like us can change lives while contributing to our country's development.

How will you appoint new leaders and transfer leadership when the founding members want to leave the team?

Often, we will organize leadership sessions to build a strong team that will stay motivated and excited throughout the projects. Give them a training on what we need to start a venture. Make sure that everyone havs the necessary skills to lead a project efficiently so that if a founding member wants to leave the team, they will be here to maintain business continuity. But also a monthly questionnary will be given to each member to measure their motivation.

How will you continue your project in 6-months time or once you have spent all of its initial capital?

We a have plan consisting in:
-Service provision to whom need it, on business skills like marketing, team building, event planning, budgeting...
- Participate in competitions to win awards or grants
- Crowfunding
-Find partners that will support us
