About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In Rwanda, many people were killed during 1994 genocide and war and it has left many widows and many female orphans as consequence many girls and young women turned into fucked jobs like commercial sex, etc which were also affected their lives. So after analyzing that situation encountered by young women and girls,we initiated LUSA project which aims at empowering women on socioeconomic development by initiating the income generation activities.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Currently, our program has targeted 3459 women in Nyaruguru, Gisagara, Huye and Nyanza districts of the southern province of Rwanda. These women have gathered in 85 women cooperatives through which we have started rice growing and garden for health where they cultivate green vegetables, etc for ending malnutrition in their families.Nowadays, the cooperative members have revolving fund in which they have to put one third of money from income generation activities and while the money raised from that revolving fund system is used to target other vulnerable women in the target districts.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

LUSA Project has been able to save the lives of targeted 3459 women in Nyaruguru, Gisagara, Huye and Nyanza districts of the southern province of Rwanda.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

LUSA project has helped more than LUSA Project has been able to save the lives of targeted 3459 women in Nyaruguru, Gisagara, Huye and Nyanza districts of the southern province of Rwanda. These women are equipped with rice growing and gardens for health as the income generation activities which help them to get school fees for their children, shelters, food and other basic needs. In addition,we have the revolving fund through which the cooperative uses to put one third of money from income generation activities and these money is used to target other women. Our vision is to eliminate hunger in poor and vulnerable women of our target district and our long term vision is to target more than 12500 vulnerable women who will escape poverty by initiating the income generation activities.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

LUSA is using cooperatives as strategy of accessing vulnerable women in rural areas because cooperatives are being promoted rather than non profit associations by the governmental of Rwanda. In addition,we have the revolving fund system adopted and this strategy helps us to target other poor women because one third of generated incomes are put into that revolving system and it helps us to target more women in our target cities. In our target areas, there is few women cooperatives and no any cooperative which has started the strategy of revolving fund that is why they are weak and unstable NGOs.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

As we have explained in our impact,we have the revolving fund system in which women cooperatives deposit one third of money from income generation activities and this money help us to target other under-served women.A part from that we have partnership with national women council which help us to fund some of our activities and also we have the team of fundraising which do local, national and international fundraising in order to get funds .

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In our target areas, women cooperatives are few and there is so many men cooperatives because they want to dominate economically women and this has pushed us to compete with them.A part from that they do not have revolving fund and this weakens them because they do not long last. More than 125 women cooperatives in our target areas, our cooperatives are 80%.

Founding Story

Miss yvette has started Let us Stay Alive Program in 2011 and this program aims at promoting and improving the living conditions of vulnerable and poor women is Gisagara district. She started this initiative after expecting that in in Nyaruguru, Gisagara, Huye, they are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty and comprise 59% of HIV infected adults and among women aged 20 to 24 years,5 times as many women are infected as men. A multitude of socio-cultural factors increase vulnerability of women to HIV/AIDS including the subordination of Rwandan women which creates their vulnerability through economic dependency, lack of assets, and limitation of protection against abuse and exploitation.
