Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

increasing the harvest in Rwanda for food security, preventing the environmental harm and harvesting every source of fertiliser by making making compost by using waste from households and animal waste products.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

what if we keep households waste during the summer and use them in rain season?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

in Rwanda, rural population are getting diseases due to poor disposal of waste from the households, as they are put nearby the house and it gets easy for them to host vectors for diseases. we don't have any use of households and animal waste produced in the summer as they dry-off, although this could be a nice source of fertilizers. this leads to poor harvest which cause food insecurity and malnutrition which cause mimic the development.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

all stated problems are going to be solved by the LETS MAKE IT, our idea is to provide plastic bins for each and every house in southern province/ Nyanza district where they can put households and animal wastes, this is a good waste disposal will help to prevent the environmental harm. each bin will be emptied once a week and wastes from the same village will be put together and the compost formation is started to be made. during the summer households and animal waste don't play any role but with the project we will solve this by making the compost to be used in rain season.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

with our project we will no longer have diseases fro the poor waste disposal as the population will be encouraged to put wastes in bins which will reduce the school absence of children from diarrhea, malaria, thyphoid, cholera and so on. compost availability will help us to increase the harvest, and this will help Rwanda to reach to food sustainability, as a great percentage, 90%, of Rwandans are living by agriculture, farmers will be encouraged and the availability of food will follow. as the agriculture is 33% leading our economy the idea will help us to progress with the development.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

LETS MAKE IT is in idea stage, but as we plan that the population will be in charge of proper disposing of waste and bringing them to the collection site for compost formation, we also plan that in monthly community work people will take it to care about the compost by changing those waste at the top will be put at the bottom and those at the bottom will be put up to promote faster putrefaction. this an idea to promote the self reliance for Rwandan population and to develop the attitude of seeking for solution by their own in their every day life. we wish to reduce the percentage of malnourished people in our country which now 33% by contributing to food security achievement.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

This project has not yet been though of in Rwanda, we will start by one the the 30 Rwandan districts, Nyanza, and after two years of implementation the effect will be remarkable and in then we will continue by nearby districts until the project will be spread in the whole country, we wish this idea can be tried in other countries with the same problem as ours.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

to start the project we will seek for funds from different donors, including regional government,NGOs, Foundations. the project will be owned and run by the community as they will be the ones to bring and take care of waste until the putrefaction is fully done. for sustainability we will work hands in hands with local leaders to take care of plastic bins and we will pattern with regional government or funders to replace the damaged bins.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

the government helps agricultural entrepreneurs to get compost and fertilizers at a lower price, which differs from us, because we are killing many birds by one stone, focusing on every one in the community as most of rural population are farmers and providing the use of summer waste and fighting against the poor waste disposal.

Founding Story

the idea was self-raised and it doesn't require many funds, but when i was talking to regional government the idea was well heard, and they promise any help that is need for implementation. our goals are included in governmental plan so each and every lead is ready to sustain the project.

as we said before this is an idea that needs to be implemented, i am sorry the board is not yet set, but i should recognize the effort of Alice IGIRANEZA and Xaveline UWERA , great advisers for the the idea development, as soon we will develop the board we should include local leaders, regional government representatives and religious leaders to help our project to be more understandable and sustainable

Tell us about your partnerships:

Lets make it is an idea to be implemented,
to achieve this we will partner with the local leadership, as we have a common goal of community development and this is included in their performance contract to be evaluated each and every year.
we will have a partnership with religion in our community to help us to mobilize the population about the issue.
partnership with funding NGOs will help us to find financial means and to buy bins.

Challenges: What challenges might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

- it will not be easy for me to convince the community about this new program but we will involve the local leadership to overcome this.
- the implementation will be delayed by getting financial support but we will increase the advocacy and networks to mitigate this.
