Breast Friends- Reaching all women diagnosed with Breast Cancer

Organization type:
nonprofit/ngo/citizen sector
$50,000 - $100,000
Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

The lack of a breast unit in Cyprus, and the stigma surrounding breast cancer diagnosis, made it very difficult for women to find information, and to have access to free prosthesis, wigs, and bras following surgery. Our program reaches every woman following her operation in the private or public sector through a special pink bag, with all the necessary information on breast cancer.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Breaking the silence! Providing women with information immediately on diagnosis. Providing women with the contact details of our organization- going to them before they come to us! Providing a trained volunteer for support immediately. Providing free prostheses, wigs etc.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The fact that it reaches all women in Cyprus, through our association but also through the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists. It has raised awareness and provided women with information and education as well as practical support. There is no cost to the woman. Our pink bags have helped to break the silence! The program is sustained by volunteers.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The level of awareness, the support and the access to information have helped significantly in promoting our main objective-to provide information and education so that women advocate for the development of breast services. We now have over 2000 members as a Forum, and over 88 women take part in our march every year to advocate for the best possible care for breast cancer in Cyprus.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

We are constantly adding enriching our program to meet the changing needs, and we are advocating and spreading the breast cancer advocacy messages in every corner of the island in talks, meetings, on our website, in personal contacts.

We hope that we will convince the Ministry to undertake the provision of bras, prostheses, wigs in the health system so we can use our funds to develop other projects.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

Continuous fund raising. This year we will add another part to our project- we will fund preoperative diagnostic tests for women who have the financial need so that all women have access to what is required in the European guidelines for preoperative diagnosis.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

Lack of funding. Lack of trained volunteers- the latter is up to us, how we keep the momentum going.

The development of a fully equipped and staffed specialized breast unit where all women will have access to optimal care.

The Story
What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

The defining moment was after we established Europa Donna in Cyprus we discovered how many women had no access to prosthesis, to basic information, and to support. This made us begin our project as we know that only through education and information can we spread our advocacy objectives, only after women begin to speak out and know their rights.
