Altrapo Lab is a creative clothes recycling laboratory where we work to recover the value of the clothes, to aware about the social and environmental impacts of the garment industry and to offer alternatives to the way clothes are consumed.

About Project

Problema: ¿Qué problema está tratando de abordar este proyecto?

The garment industry is the second more polluting industries in the world. Most of the workers of the garment industry are close to slavery conditions. Without any rights, low salaries for unending work hours, without the chance to have unions… Each person in the developed countries consumes an average of 10kg of clothes per year and gets rid off other 10kg of clothes too…

EDUCATION: We offer awareness workshops, which we organize in 2 parts. Theory: where we share all our knowledge on the impacts of the garment industry through different dynamics, and offer a space to rethink our way to consume clothes and put the clothes in value. Practise: where we share our alternative to this compulsive consumption, the creative clothes recycling, we give different tools to lengthen the life of our clothes. PRODUCTION: We have our own recycled clothes line. We mostly make backpacks and money-belts which materializes our answer to this global issue.
Impact: How does it Work

By making our clothes last longer we reduce the textile waste, reduce the pollution and the CO2 emissions. Having all the information we give in the workshop specially through this vivential dynamics makes the users take an active position, they realize the power they have in their daily activities around clothing (shopping, washing, drying, maintaining, trashing…)

- Through our workshops we have already worked with over 100 people, - One of our groups it's trying to build some kind of local network to trade clothes, and share knowledges and experiences. - Most of the people that comes to our workshops ends up buying a sewing machine or using the one that they have and never used to repair the clothes already have! That's a big step! - Getting in schools we want to impact on teenagers who we believe have the key of the change. We want to become them in critical consumers.

Estrategias de Expansión: Avanzar, qué son los estrategias principales para ampliar su impacto?

EDUCATION:Make a pilot workshop in a school and develop 3 didactic units with 3 videos to support the unities. (2016) (The didactic units will be open code) Settle the workshops in schools, keep developing didactic unities. Start training trainers to repilcate the workshops. 2020. PRODUCTION: Outsourcing our production in social and labor integration projects. (2017) TRAINING PROGRAMS We are testing this work line. We are already making a pilot in a project which works with people with psychological disabilities and we are going to train them to make their own production of aprons.

Plan de Sustentabilidad Financiera: ¿Cuál es el plan para asegurar la sostenibilidad financiera de esta solución?

We have 2 main ways to get funds through our work. Workshops and classes. Selling our products. And we are trying to get funds (through prizes, grants or private donors) to make this training programs and pilot workshops in schools.

Humana, Ecotextile solidarity, Recumadrid, are the big companies that work with textile waste in Madrid. They just collect the textile waste and sell it. We want to go further. 1st. Reduce this waste through the awareness workshops, offer the chance to trade, and recycle when is possible. Slow Fashion Spain is working to support sustainable fashion. They go more to fashion trademarks. TRAID UK. They are a bigger company with the same mission. The difference is the scale and that they work in UK.

Historia fundacional

4 years ago we decided that we wanted to make something creative with old clothes,we asked our friends to donate us their old clothes. We packed a room.Most of them were made in Asia, were made in cotton and were really good looking, some of them had the labels from the shops! So,who makes our clothes?In which conditions?What makes us buy things that we are going to use just a couple of times?We looked for the answers, and as we suspected the garment industry is not sustainable at all.We were in the need to aware about social and environmental impacts of the garment industry to recover the value of the clothes and to rethink our way to consume them.This is how Altrapo Lab started.

Problemas ocultos a la vista: Condiciones en campos, bosques, fabricas visibles por unos pocos., Los consumidos no están motivados para tomar conciencia: Ni hay razones de peso ni medios cercanos para cambiar los hábitos de los consumidores , La sustentabilidad todavía no está en el ADN: Los modelos actuales de moda desincentivan economías de valor.
