About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

At leas 25% of the Egyptian population live under the national poverty line.Poverty is on the rise due to the ongoing political instability and women are marginalized more than ever.Furthermore, only 18% of Egyptian women are employed in the non-agriculture sector.Women aren't involved in the economic process.Women are rarely regarded as possible breadwinners although they constitute a large part of the society and are a potential source of income

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Including women in the economic process, offering them a chance to be financially independent, encouraging them to disseminate their skills and possibly create clusters producing in the same area enhances economic development and is a solution to poverty.Financial independence and self-sufficiency of a woman will also expand and fortify her other rights and will make her an equal decision maker inside the household. This project only requires basic skills and training and it does not require a high start up capital.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

In Egypt, most people buy their vegetables from stands on the street. Usually from illiterate women from a less fortunate background go to vegetable producers and whole-sellers, they purchase the vegetables from them and then they re-sell them on makeshift stands inside the cities. They sit on street corners or infront of schools, sell their products for a few hours, remove everything at the end of the day and head home with the few pennies they earned. They developed basic budgeting skills, they know the markets and they know who and where the buyers are. They rely solely on this as their main source of income.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Women develop the confidence and ability to manage their own small project. They will also learn that they are the sole decision makers. It will make them discover skills they didn't think they possessed or did not realized they had, such as budgeting and managing a small start-up capital. The Egyptian society prescribes the traditional role of women as a wife and care-taker.However,one of the impacts of this project,is changing their own perspectives about that, turning them into entrepreneurs, thinkers, deciion-makers and beneficial to their families and communities. This will create a motive for women to sustain and persist on growing, developing and managing their projects.Eventually, each woman will circulate her knowledge and skills to other women in her community who would eventually engage in the same activities, creating small markets in their neighborhoods.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

This project doesn't require a big budget. I plan to invest my own savings as a start up for the required tools.Revenue generation and re-investement will be the basis for the first step in expanding the project.Later,I plan to teach other women to replicate the model and each woman should train other women as well. It will rely on a pay it forward process.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Because of the nature of the product,i.e:perfectly homogeneous basic products, there aren't big players that stand out in the market per say. Most herbs are acquired from the local vegetable markets and there is usually a shortage. However,in Cairo, two companies process these herbs and distribute them in big supermarkets;Mafa and Tabarak. An untapped part of the market is the restaurants and hotels who are also constantly facing the shortage of a product like Basil. My edge would be in growing organic, low cost products in combination with the appropriate branding image and packaging.

Founding Story

As an avid cook interested in Italian cuisine, I would always face difficulty finding aromatic herbs to use. Therefore, about a year ago, I decided to plant my own herbs for my personal usage. Watching my herbs grow and using the product of my own hands in my own kitchen gave me insurmountable happiness.Seeing all this greenery in my balcony was uplifting and it also expanded my interest in the types of plants I was growing.I started planting flowers and decorative plants to make my own garden. I no longer felt trapped inside concrete blocks,it gave life to my balcony, office and apartment. I feel more in tone with nature and healthier.

Barriers: What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

The main barrier I suspect is the inability of the women to reach the market or know how to liaise with the potential customers to sell their herbs. I plan to research the market thoroughly and give them a training on the finding. Furthermore, I plan to devise a marketing campaign to promote a certain brand image and enhance that with packaging which will be the main edge differentiating our products from the rest of the market.

Full Impact Potential: What are the main spread strategies moving forward? (Please consider geographic spread, policy reform, and independent replication/adoption of the idea or other mechanisms.)
