Let's make use of our waste! Human waste can create natural and easily accessible fertilizer for food production. By developping human manure composting systems we can close the loop of nutrients in the food system to produce cheap food locally and improve sanitation systems for a sustainable future

About Project

Problème : Quel problème ce projet essaie-t-il d'adresser ?

Conventional agriculture uses chemical fertilizers from depleting resources. These fertilizers bring the nutrients to the plants and end up in our food. After being eaten, digested and excreted through human waste nutrients are flushed away and wasted into our environment. In that system we exploit finished resources, waste nutrients and pollute our planet. The upcoming energy crisis and environmental issue require change toward sustainaibility.

Separating gray water and black water can create natural and easily accessible fertilizer for food production. This way we can reuse all the things we get from the field. By recycling the nutrients we create cheap and available resource for agriculture. It allows an increase of local production everywhere expecially for those who otherwise have difficulty having adequate food supply. This natural fertilizer can act as one component of a pathway to food security for poor communities, improving at the same time sanitation systems thus global health. It also increases community autonomy and independence from food aid, creates jobs, reinforce social links within the community and is a more symbiotic human/nature relationship.

Human urine has been shown to be an effective agricultural fertilizer. Scientific as well as on field experiences have been made showing the potential of human waste for agriculture. Resources from wastewater are presented through the annual discharge from one person that produces in average 4.5kg of Nitrogen, 0.6kg of Phosphorus, 1.0kg of Potassium and 35kg of Organic matter. The fertilizer value of blackwater from 900 Mio people in rural China has been estimated to 2.5 billion USD per year. Composting toilet have been implemented at roadside facility in Sweden. Urine was separated from faeces and greywater, stored in tanks and used as fertilizer. It also allowed an important saving of water.

We want to go further and use this technology as an opportunity to develop urban agriculture in order to increase food production and access to food. In ecological sanitation urine and feces are separated, stored and processed into fertilizers and biofuels. These resources are produced thus available everywhere. Urban agriculture would help meeting issues of food provision in big cities. It has also the potential to create jobs and create a network reinforcing social communities. When we bring farming to the city we also bring its ecosystem services that can be environmental, socio-cultural and economic. Urban gardening could then be a sustainable solution to food security in urban area.

Plan de viabilité financière : Quel est le plan de cette solution qui permet un financement durable à cette initiative ?

The greatest barriers to this project are initial infrastructure investment vs. payback time, acceptability of some cultures to use human manure, education of safe composting to remove pathogens. In order to cross these barriers a global social change is necessary, requiring campaigns and information for people to understand and change their paradigms. We also think that incentives from state power or NGOs would be helpful in some cases.

Histoire de votre fondation

We are 5 students from different countries and different fields of studies. We are all currently studying in Ås (Norway) where we are trying to have a nice sustainable community by for example doing dumptser diving. We are all aware of the global issues and all of us want to do something about sustainability of the planet.

Closing nutrient cycle with available and cheap fertilizers (from human waste) is a good way to promote local food production. Producing quality food for a healthy diet is an important follow up of the project. Moreover our project will promote the implementation of adequate sanitation systems which is an important human health issue.
