About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Development Wheel has been involved in various projects in the greater Mymensingh area of Bangladesh, specifically to empower women. Women of greater Mymensingh district areas are still confined with social stigma due to the conventional notion of patriarchy and conservative religious norms. DEW has tried to provide them with IT facilities, eg. computer and internet access and basic IT based knowledge. The problems that DEW had in mind to solve was to empower women by giving them sufficient knowledge about the modern world, thus making them aware of their rights and as a result making them empowered through being involved into income generating activities.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

To eliminate the rate of violence against women and increase their participation in the betterment of the society, DEW has taken a step to introduce them to the world outside by giving them access to IT. DEW has been working with Changemakers in Mymensingh district, Changemakers who believe in gender equity and women's rights, who raise awareness against domestic violence. From these Changemakers who were involved in various activities, Dew chose several women and gave them access to computers and internet, trying to make them skilled in the IT sector to make them able to participate in the economy of the society other than maintaining their own welfare.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

As a development organization, when we look for people to work for such organizations we find that there are hardly any people who have even basic knowledge about IT. For instance in the district of Mymensingh there were hardly any access to computers or internet. By implementing this project we were willing to make a knowledge based community, creating an HR community that have sufficient knowledge of IT. And emphasizing on women, we were trying to reduce their vulnerability by making them empowered. And now in the greater Mymensingh area there are women who have knowledge about IT, who are more aware about their rights and are economically sustained. Primarily we were acknowledging the inhabitants to raise their voice against violence to women, inspiring them to be Changemakers and influence others to be so. On the second phase we started giving them knowledge about computers. And also with help of the allies we have in the media we were trying to raise awareness about it in the society.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Currently there are no direct competitors. Certain private sectors are trying to work on the issues that are related to it. The policies of the Government of Bangladesh are supportive of the measures that we have taken.

Founding Story

We were working with Oxfam GB from 2008 to 2011, and they helped out with the founding seeing what the impact of the Changemakers could be. The project phased out after the end of 2011, but we continued with this program with our limited resources.
