About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

We use electricity, gas and water on daily basis but not everyone know how to maximize the use of all these daily needs. Some even go as far as bypassing measuring equipment put in place by the utility companies all because they simply want to use more and pay less. AfricaMetering is set to educate the consumers on how to use all these utilities effectively by monitoring their consumption as well as providing tips on daily basis.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The focus of this project is on Africa, 90% or more of Africa population make use of electricity, gas, and water on daily basis. It is now of importance to educate consumers on how to use these facilities effectively to save cost, especially when the attention is gradually moving from conventional metering to smart meter. Our website educates consumers on how to conserve electricity, gas and water. We educate consumers about their meters and how they can effectively use the tool to save more money and save the world. We can also provide them mobile gadgets such as our IMID. IMID enables mobile devices communicate with electricity Meter remotely at real time; to recharge, check balance and even get consumption & low credit alerts notification

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

We test ran IMID in September this year by installing 50 IMID application on customers mobile phones. It turned out to be a fantastic tool, where consumers got familiar with their electricity meter, according to them they can monitor their consumption and set credit limit. One of the customers testified that before leaving home in the morning she can use IMID to check balance on her meter and while in the office or far away from home she can monitor the usage of electricity by the maid and children. Almost 30% of the customers confirmed to us after 3 months of usage that they now conserve electricity using IMID, (the functionality can actually be carried out on the meter manually). With IMID on their finger tips its easier, faster and safer.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The Impact of IMID and AfricaMetering presently is that people who are already using the software on their mobile phones are aware that they can use energy effectively, they can save cost by reducing their electricity consumption by monitoring their appliances by putting off the ones that are not in use. They are also aware that they can make use of information available for them on their electricity meters. Through our website they are learning tips on how to conserve electricity. Educating consumers about electricity, gas and water hazard. With our AfricaMetering Community Forums, consumers are learning from other consumers. In 5 years to come, we expect to see IMID and AfricaMetering recognized across Africa and the world educating electricity, gas and water consumers and fully recognized by the international community for promoting GREEN ENERGY.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

To promote effective GREEN ENERGY across Africa, We need to spread our winds and our presence in almost all African countries. To actualize this, we have realized the need to make this solution strong in the hosting country, Nigeria (being the most populous African country) so that we can have strong reference point. A dedicated representative across African countries, to feed us information on the challenges they are facing in their various countries and review with our advisory committee to provide solution and boosting the GREEN-ENERGY campaign.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The IMID software is not going to be free when it is finally ready to be downloaded on all mobile phones, though we would try as much as possible to make it affordable so as to effectively promote GREEN ENERGY. We already provided an avenue to make money on our website AfricaMetering.com for sustainability by providing advert space on the website.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

When I looked through some of the previous projects, I could not find anyone really addressing it the way I have put it here. The approach of my project is different because it's about promoting GREEN ENERGY among consumers using meters.

Founding Story

An idea came to my mind to connect to electricity meter remotely with a mobile phone. I went online to find out how possible that could be, found some facts on how it can be achieved, I spoke to my boss about the idea and for his support to start experimenting but to my greatest surprise he didn't give me adequate audience. I didn't allow that discourage me I went on to look for possible ways. The moment was when my boss went to China to introduce GPRS meter into Nigeria market for the first time. This was an opportunity for me to exhibit my talent because as at then I couldn't afford to buy the meter. Secondly was when my idea won best innovative idea in the Etisalat Prize for Innovation.

Currently I have 4 young men supporting this great idea but all are on part time basis because they all have full time job, in fact I have to make sure I arrange my time to fit to theirs. They are currently supporting me to see it is successful because of the potentiality of the idea. It's one of the delaying factors for the project to fully materialize, I do the funding with the little I have and dedicated my full time to the whole project. I have the plan of employing them as full time staff when we can afford to do that.
