EseObels' New Entry: Solid Waste Management

Project Stage:
$50,000 - $100,000
Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Poor solid waste management has been a major problem in Nigeria, it is the cause of most health issues and environmental disasters such as floods. Recycling is the solution to poor solid waste management in Nigeria.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if our communities are free of waste pollution and these wastes are recycled and put to good use?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

This project seeks to address the problems associated with poor solid waste management. Recycling provides for proper retrieval, transportation and deposition of solid wastes, this in turn leads to cleaner environment resulting in good health conditions and also generation of wealth.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The solution to poor waste management practices is recycling, this provides for proper disposal of wastes. An oraganised system of waste collection, transportation and deposition is adopted, waste items are then selected and processed.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

In a typical local Nigerian community, wastes are gathered and dumped in a river or drainage. In situations where there are no nearby drainages or rivers, these wastes are gathered into a heap and wastes are deposited day in day out year in year out, this heaps result in environmental pollution and health problems such as malaria, cholera etc. Recycling of waste provides for collection of these wastes, transportation and organized deposition in an area far away from communities, leading to low rates of health problems and reduction in risk of environmental problems such as floods. Recycling creates a drastic change in such a community as it also provides employment and income while catering to their environmental problems.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

This project aims at providing solutions to waste management problems in all communities in Nigeria while providing employment and generating wealth from wastes. The project tackles most of Nigeria's major problems.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

This project is intended to start in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti and spread through all local governments and the entire country as a whole. Tons of wastes are generated by the day and these wastes are worth millions, this project aims at bringing Nigeria steps forward in development.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

As soon as the project kicks off investors would be approached to invest. State governments would be approached also for partnership.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Projects on changemakers addressing this problem dwell on certain aspects. This project encompasses all aspects of solid waste management and recycling. This project incorporates biodegradable and nonbiodegradable wastes.

Founding Story

Living in Nigeria, it isn't strange to see heaps of wastes on certain parts of some streets, in rivers, drainages etc. My passion for solid waste management has always been inbuilt as a child in Nigeria but my interest in solid waste management peaked in my final year at the university when I carries out a research on "The influence of flooding on the socioeconomic activities of people in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State". During my research I was exposed to how much damage poor waste management can cause. In course of my study, I discovered the solution to poor waste management in Nigeria is recycling of waste products as it would generate wealth and also check health problems.
