Problems: 1. Environmental pollution by agricultural waste 2. Malnutrition due to rising prices of meat protein 3. Unemployment in rural and peri-urban communities

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Our goal is the first industrial plant in Gauteng with the capacity for producing 10 tons of wet insect biomass daily using abattoir and vegetable waste. We want to develop relationships with rural co-operative to create community based insect rearing centers which will collect waste from the abattoirs and use it to grow fly larvae for sale in our central processing plant. This way we will create employment and divert untreated agricultural waste from our water ways.

Impact: How does it Work

The solution will divert 100 tons of waste from entering our waterways and create employment for a minimum of 20 people per site. This will bring income to rural economies and speed up development. The overall impact will be the movement away from using unsustainable fish meal to feed livestock to more sustainable insect based protein.

Development of Pilot rearing facility producing 2 tons of protein a week and absorbing 1 ton of waste employing 10 people intitially moving the labour force to 20 permanent employees by year end . Selling protein and compost to the organic market at competitive prices. We will also develop replicable processes and fly farm kit. Develop second 2 ton rearing site in Mamelodi Pretoria in collaboration with a local co-operatives the site will rear larvae and sell to Khepri in order to increase production

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

• Year 4: Develop a centralised factory where the four rearing facilities will deliver and cells reared dry larvae for processing in a production plant. Plant will produce whole dried Larvae (5%), full fat meal powder (55%) and No fat meal and magoil (60%). Finding of product agents for export of product in the SADC region Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Namibia. • Year 5: Development of Khepri Innovations in the Eastern Cape, North West and Limpopo. Licence technology to other African countries in return for royalties and consultation fees.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We have been financing our development through winnings we received in the Gauteng Accelerator Program 2013 for Green innovation. We are currently raising funds for the assets needed for a pilot site and we should break even in 2015 and be able to run the sites from the proceeds of selling the protein and compost.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There is a purely commercial venture based in Cape Town, we are using the process to develop communities, create employment and wealth in under-resourced communities. Our strategy involves training and supporting community co-operatives in establishing independent rearing sites in order to bring wealth into those communities.

Global Animal protein production is depended on the overexploitation of two resources land to produce Soya and Oceans to produce fishmeal. There is a need for 40 million tons of seafood worldwide per year by 2030 just to meet current consumption rates. Meet consumption rates South Africa increase by 3.5% annually. By 2050 we would have collapsed the global supply of seafood resources. Also in 2050 3 billion people will be living in Africa. How will we feed these people? That is the question Khepri Biosciences seeks to answer through pioneering new ways of raising animals and lowering the costs of animal farming.
