About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In developing countries about 20,000 girls get pregnant everyday and drop out of school and in one of Ghana's regions 13,000 girls dropped out of school in 2012. Teenage pregnancy is rampant in developing countries especially Ghana leading to poverty , unemployment and an increase in social vices. Girls get pregnant, drop out of school, give birth to children they cannot take care of and the poverty cycle goes on.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The proposed solution is to build a network of rural girls or girls from deprived areas or homes where they go through hands on lessons in three key areas; sex education, entrepreneurship and health. Sex education to give them practical information on sexual and reproductive health issues, health to encourage them to practice personal hygiene and entrepreneurship to give them an entrepreneurial mindset where they can establish their own businesses Girls would be paired with mentors to direct them on their Journey An educational fund to support the basic needs of girls An educational fund is available to provide basic needs of girls Meetings with parents to discuss the progress of the child and the way forward

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Jennifer a 13 year old girl lives in Berekuso in the Eastern Region of Ghana with her grandmother and they hardly make ends meet. She is surrounded by peers who give her pressure to make unhealthy decisions like sleeping with men for money . Jennifer loves o study but sometimes goes hungry in school. She hears of A New Dawn and signs on with her Grandmother's consent. A New Dawn not only gives her information to resist bad peers but gives her the opportunity to make new friends, share her challenges, gives her money to school and insights to how she can start a business to earn her own money. She is part of a community where she is loved and motivated to excel in every aspect of her life

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The impact of the work so far has been amazing. We started with 15 girls in Berekuso and we now have about 60 girls. These girls have grown in confidence and they are beginning to make critical and analytical decisions. One girl was asked how this program has transformed her life and she said," I have started learning more in school because I am always encouraged to work hard and live a good life ". These girls are opening up sharing very sensitive stories and we are here helping them overcome some of these challenges. Even though the project centers on sex education, entrepreneurship and health , it is a community where girls feel safe and share anything from their lives. For some they call it their home. The projected impact is to reach a thousand girls in Ghana within 3 years.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

All documents are readily available to replicated anywhere. First of all the project would be introduced into deprived Senior High schools as clubs so they can also engage whiles they are in school. University Graduates and workers who are passionate about this project would be trained through the curriculum . These students or workers would be posted at places closest to their home so they do not have to struggle so much in reaching the girls twice in a month. A yearly program would be organized where they would be competitions to get them to engage and connect with each other.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Our plan for financial sustainability is to sell customized shirts made by A New Dawn at premium prices to support the cause. Also we plan to make newsletters that would be titled A New Dawn which would be produced once every two weeks to be sold to school children at affordable prices. This newsletter would contain real life stories of teenagers around Africa to inspire others. Columns would be created for ads to generate money.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are many organization focused on women empowerment. However, I have not come across one that mainly focuses on sex education, entrepreneurship and health in Ghana and Africa. Most of these organizations have a wide range of topics they work on so sometimes they might just dedicate one to teenage pregnancy e.tc. Our work is unique because it creates a network of developing girls who think analytically to make grounded decisions for themselves because life has challenges and everyone has to learn how to deal with them especially girls.

Founding Story

Founding Story 700 Growing up, as the second of three children, living with her elderly sister, autistic younger brother, her father, a taxi driver and her mother a trader Grace’s journey was not an easy ride. There were several difficult times in the family where she had to struggle since it became difficult for them to make ends meet. However, the situation never prevented her from learning hard because I was blessed with a family that gave me so much support and mentors who always challenged me to do more .Today, Grace is a MasterCard Foundation Scholar at Ashesi University College. She felt the urgent need to give back to society all the good things it has given to her.

Presently, we are working from school and every one on board in volunteering. Currently we have the General Secretary, the Human Relations officer who is in charge of all mentors, instructors and measuring impact, the Finance team in charge of handling our our revenues and expenditure , the branding and advertising team who are in charge of marketing and advertising the program. Finally the Founder and Director who oversees all departments and make sure things are running efficiently and effectively. As the project grows the composition of the team would change because I would be out of school in 2016 and I would have a completely new team who are passionate and have the skills to work outside of school on the project.
