About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Gender based violence that has plagued the Kenyan public road transport network.Women suffer sexual abuse and harassment in the Kenyan public service vehicles. The public service vehicles drivers and conductors have little to no professional development, are uncouth and unfriendly to the public at large.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Flone Initiative works to create safe commuter spaces and improve the lives of public service vehicles operators by offering trainings on customer service, prevention of sexual violence and professional development. The certification will improve working conditions for the operators and equip them with skills that will help them grow beyond their current jobs, improving their working conditions and future employment prospects. The certification will lead the way in innovation and enhancement of the customer experience in the public road transport network, as well as in anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

There are 160,000 drivers and conductors working in the Kenyan public road transport network, who consider their jobs as transitory. Flone Initiative empowers the drivers and conductors with skills needed to turn their jobs into profession and also increase their job prospects. There are 2 million commuters using public road transport daily who will benefit from the customer service training that we offer. More than half of that number are women, through our prevention of sexual violence training, Flone Initiative creates safe commuter spaces for female commuters.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Flone Initiative has spent the last few years educating public transport providers on professionalism and the acceptable treatment of women. There has been zero (0) recurring incidences in the 4 commuter spaces that Flone Initiative has held trainings. However, In November 2014, incidences of sexual violence escalated. Flone Initiative together with allies organized the #MyDressMyChoice Campaign that saw thousands of women protest the violence against women in the Kenyan public transport network. Flone Initiative hopes create a safe public transport network that anticipates and responds to women's safety and security needs. In addition, Flone Initiative plans to train public transport operators to be facilitators and increase our impact and reach needed to train 160,000 youth workforce in the transport industry.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We plan to identity public transport operators that we train as trainers so as to expand our impact and reach by increasing our male trainers from two to 10 trainers. We plan to further develop our partnerships with the governmental ministries in the hope that the training will be made mandatory for all transport operators. We plan to develop more partnerships that will enable us to incorporate other trainings and discussion forums into the program such as first aid training and financial literacy.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

It was mandatory for all those seeking a Transport Licensing Board (TLB) certification to be members of a transport group or belong to a company. About 1,000 matatu Saccos and four hundred companies have been registered. We are developing a revenue model where either the transport group and/or the operators will register for the certification and pay a fee.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Women Empowerment link (WEL) will be launching a research into women and transportation. WEL has not to unveiled whether it will running program in public transport. We are the only organization that specifically focuses on improving the lives of public transport operators and our training is conducted by male facilitators despite Flone Initiative being a women-led and run organization.

Founding Story

I ride on public transportation and grew up watching my uncles work as public transport vehicles drivers, conductors and cleaners and they are decent men who had no other career options and the matatu industry enabled them to provide for their families. Our extended family grew financially as a result of the family business in public transport vehicles. At the same time, I was physically assaulted by public transport vehicles conductors while the rest of the public transport operators stood by and watched. How could I reconcile the two realities? I spent the last few years working in the public transport industry and developing the Public Safety Certification.

The flone team consists of young ladies with diverse competencies in disciplines such as law, psychology, business administration, journalism and public relations. We influence and inspire one another: push our world forward. We make things happen, we get things done. The certification was developed by focus groups consisting of female commuters and public service vehicle drivers and conductors. In addition, we have designed the program to be highly sensitive to the target group needs hence ensuring community buy-in. The current Flone Initiative team are volunteers who are commute using public service vehicles, are passionate about the cause and commit their time and sometimes money to ensuring the successful execution of the project.
