Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

When all the strategies to put an end to road accidents have failed, a new strategy has to be adopted! According to the recent WHO reports, 1.24 million people die and 50 million are injured or incapacitated by road accidents every year!

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if a phone app could monitor all passengers on the highway, help check reckless driving, notify emergency teams, notify families of victims and reduce the number of deaths on the highway?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In Cameroon, more than 15, 000 people die/injured every year from road accidents. to make things worst, families of victims hardly get information about an accident and so, the Government of Cameroon has occasionally buried unidentified corps when no one claims them. Also, road safety/intervention and emergency teams hardly get a notification on time, and the exact location and tools to be used for an intervention are hardly known.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Safe travel consists of a phone app which permits passengers to register themselves and confirm a trip, check their accurate location during a journey, and register information about a relative he/she would want us to contact in case of an accident. Once the passenger fills and validates this information, our server collects the information and creates a folder containing bus matriculation number and contact information of relatives. The app also permits passengers/users report misconduct by drivers simply by sending a photo, and matriculation number of bus/car involved. When a report is received, the server runs the matriculation number of bus/car and then emergency measures are taken (location, road safety, emergency, relatives)

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The Yaounde-Douala highway has been consistently ranked amongst the deadliest in the world, with 130 people dying every month and 19857 injured or incapacitated. this is mainly due to reckless driving. Safe travel would permit all passengers in Cameroon to denounce misconduct on the highway. more than 100 000 people use the Yaounde-Douala highway every day, including citizens of the republics of Chad and Centrafrique. Our server is capable of monitoring all registered buses, and so we immediately know the exact origin of a complaint or accident and in case of an emergency, intervention teams hospitals and road safety teams know the exact location of accident. family members are also notified

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We currently repair, maintain and monitor buses of two amongst the top 5 safest transport companies in Cameroon. Once our project goes national, all passengers shall be able to denounce misconduct thereby making it possible to sanction reckless drivers. According to the zero draft of the Brasilia Declaration, 1.24 million people die as a result of road accidents and 50 million are injured or incapacitated every year from highway accidents. the report insists that 90% of all accidents are recorded in developing countries where the transport and information system is dysfunctional. our server has been designed in such a way that once we receive a report, we know the exact location of origin, and so, emergency/intervention teams would not only know the exact location , but the intensity and tools required when an accident occurs. it is very easy adapting the platform in other dev. countries

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Although most components of the project are either complete or 80 percent, we shall make the project go National in December 2015. We shall start with the Yaounde-Douala highway currently ranked amongst the deadliest in the world, monitoring all users of the app, buses carrying these passengers and notifying road safety teams when there is a misconduct on the highway. our app also permits passengers to upload pictures, thereby facilitating the work of road safety teams. We intend to reduce the number of road accidents to a less than 40 by April 2016, and globally to less than 500 000 by 2019
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The repairs and maintenance sector is self-sustaining- client companies pay us for the services we render to them. The phone app is free to passengers. Informing relatives is also free. So, if all the services are free, how do we intend to keep the safe travel project running? -through making advertisements on the app -through providing monitoring services to transport companies -through fines paid by drivers from sanctions

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We are establishing a unique system that has not been realized before, centered around the mediocre information system in Africa and the quality of drivers. unfortunately, there are no tools to check reckless driving or misconduct on the highway. Our platforms shall fill the void. we shall also be monitoring buses, as most companies offering GPS services, but we shall have the advantage over them in that we shall monitor buses, give information to transport companies concerning quality of service from complaints received from passengers. people shall also use the app as UBER- to look for taxi

Founding Story

Growing up as a child, i lost a cousin from an accident in Bamenda town. We the immediate relatives only heard about his death 73 days later. Also, the problems we faced while growing up either still persist or even get dire- We currently have one of the deadliest highways in the world, and the information system is still mediocre! We decided to establish first a coordination system for buses of our clients. this made them to be named amongst the safest in Cameroon 2014. Although our clients were improving, accidents, which are very evitable still remain amongst the leading cause of death. Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.satra.traveler
