About Project

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Patients needing blood donors have to just call 07961907766 (From India) or +917961907766 (From Outside India) . They have to then select the language which they understand (English or Hindi (Our National language)) . They are then asked to Select the Blood Group they need by selecting the option given (Press 1 for A+ve). They have to then enter the (Std Code / Area Code) of their city. They are then given the Voluntary Blood Donors Number. The number is repeated thrice so that the Person can check whether he/she has written the number correctly. The call is then disconnected. He can then call up the donors and ask him for the blood donation. If he needs more donors he can call again .

Founding Story

We saw a poor patient die for want of blood in a hospital . The could not arrange for blood donors as they were from a village and they did not know anybody in the city. In 1999 I was using the internet to send mails to my cousin. Sitting in the internet cafe i realised that i could use the power of the internet and information technology to bring the patient and the blood donors together.

Explain what the "innovation" is about, e.g., is it the idea and/or the model you use to accomplish the idea, or your understanding of the target population, etc.?

The Innovation is about the Model we are using to accomplish the idea. In the initial years was web enabled meaning the patients could search for blood donors on the website itself. Slowly we realised that in times of an emergency patients could not search for a computer and search for donors. We then SMS enabled our helpline and we were quite successful. Patient who needed blood donors could just sms in a particular format to a Short Code / Long code and get connected to blood donors in their city / area. In the process we learnt that only 35 % of the people could sms. And if they sent the sms in a wrong format they could not connect. Especially people who did not know the English Language. We then learnt that 100 % of the Population could make a call if they were given a number to get connected to blood donors.

Describe how your innovation model is distinct from any other organization in your field?

Our model is innovative as there is no other organisation who are thinking about the people in the Bottom of the Pyramid. A Patient in need of Blood Donors just need to call our number. Our National Language is Hindi . As of today we Connect the patients who call the helpline in Hindi and English. We are in the process of adding other regional languages .

What type of operating environment and internal organizational factors make your innovation successful?

We are trying to make a zero sum based initiative. We motivate ordinary people and corporates, NGO to share their resources and time and help build a sustainable model. And we have been very successful as we have been doing this since the last 13 years and we are growing everyday.

How do you make sure you constantly innovate in light of (potential) external challenges, or your growth plan?

We always try to do what is needed and what is helpful to the comman man. We are now in the process of making a Mobile App for Blood on the Android Platform. As there is a growth in Smartphones.

Social Impact
What methods for quantification of social impact are you applying (if at all)?

We track every request that comes in. We have seen that 80 % of our Requests are on the IVRS platform. We Sometimes call up the numbers and try to see which section of society is using them.

Could your solution work in other geographies or regions? If so, where?

This solultions can work in other countries like Pakistan , Srilanka, Nepal and other developing countries where blood shortages are a problem and it is the onus of the Patient or his relatives who have to arrange blood donors.

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

We feel that once we add regional languages to our helpline and Mobile Operators also link their IVRS helplines to . More people will connect via Call and less through SMS.

Elaborate on your current financing strategy

We have an annual Budget of Rs 18,500 or about $ 350 . Very Simple. We have tied up with an IVRS platform who have given us a free number to connect to . People making calls to this number are charged an ordinary Std Call . We dont take any revenues from nor do they charge us for this service.

We have tied up with a SMS Short Code 55444 . is the company who have provided us this Short Code. They are connected to almost all the Major Mobile operators in the Country. They have given us this Short Code Free. They Charge Rs 1/- for all incoming sms. We dont take any revenues from them nor do they charge us anything. is our Hosting Provider who has provided Web Hosting for free of cost. Since the Last 13 years.

We have our own in house Long Code 9665500000 which we use for broadcasting request for blood in times of emergencies and blood shortages. We spend about 15,000/- Rs per Annum on this and about Rs 3500/- for our domain name which we pay to the domain registrar.

So the total of Rs 18,500 which we spend is spent from the interest of $ 10,000 which we won from the Ashoka Changemakers Award.
