About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Every 5 minutes, a pregnant woman dies as a result of preventable causes which can be averted through proper health education, Pregnancy guides ,follow up and antenatal care in Nigeria. About 260,000 newborn lives are also lost yearly in Nigeria alone due to vaccine-preventable causes. Many new and expectant mothers lack access to preventive health education and most fail to attend antenatal care thereby increasing childbirth risk.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We built a low cost web technology to help save and improve lives of pregnant mothers and newborns under the age of 5 years. Our cloud system allows mothers to access vital health information on low cost phones in rural communities in any local language. No need to have internet.Our advanced web communication channel allows institutions to educate and track health of nursing/pregnant mothers, push immunization notifications to remind mothers to present their babies for vaccinations, notify them about when to attend antenatal care/test, disperse epidermic alerts via 2-way SMS,USSD and voice services based on their foetal development stages. We work with Health institutes, NGOs, Government which uses our proprietary software to communicate...

Impact: How does it Work

The joy of Mrs. Ariyo, knew no bound when she delivered herbaby . Before her new bundle of joy, she had suffered repeated loss during childbirth due to vaccine preventablecauses ; a situation which earned her several name tags from her in-laws. Unfortunately, Mrs Ariyo is only one of women that losses 260,000 newborns yearly in Nigeria. Today, the story is different. Mrs Ariyo who reside in a low income and undeserved rural community in Ekiti is now part of the SaferMom platform receiving notifications to remind mothers to present her baby for vaccinations and attend antenatal care/test in her nearest primary health in a Yoruba language.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We have registered 2340 pregnant mothers in rural communities in Nigeria into the SaferMom mobile health program. This which includes providing mobile health services through SMS ,voice services and mobile health services .All with the intention of educating mothers with vital health illiteracy during and after pregnancy. This has also improved attendance of ante natal care, presentation of babies for immunization and general improvement of maternal and newborn health in these communities by at least 45%. We have also recruited at least 40 volunteers (which will include at least 90% girl and women) to register mothers in their local communities. They go on to develop small business with stipends paid for their contribution to actualization of the project in their communities. Our solutions will help reduce maternal and child deaths which urgently demands attention and scalable models

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Our goal is to Improve maternal/child health and family health in low income communities across sub-Sahara Africa ;thereby reducing avoidable death due to complication from child birth by 2025. We also hope to Improve antenal visit and show cases for presentation of babies for immunization by least 50% which are neccessary for avoiding childbirth complications . We hope to 2 millions of mothers in 4 countries in 4 years. We hope to scale SaferMom across subsahara Africa by building key partners with Governments, Telecoms, NGOs, Health institutions, and Private sectors.

1)A Freemium model that allows mothers to access for immunization/ANC care reminders for free. 2)A premium model that allows pregnant and nursing mothers to access unlimited vital health information via SMS and USSD throughout the gestation period for less than $4/mother 3)A Custom-tailored solutions for pharmaceutical companies, Hospitals, NGOs to track/engage mothers they serve in any developing economies with our API/proprietary software

Unlike other competitors, we provide Voice platforms with a robust database for discharging services to our subscribers. Our SMS platforms are provided in 3 major languages which helps to ensure effective communication with subscribers who neither can read nor write.Our platform is robust, unique and user centric.

Founding Story

Growing up in a small village , my aunt lost her baby few days after delivery due to poor access to health care.An ordeal which left so much agonizing pains and emotional trauma within the extended family.Upon making it to university in medical college, I developed deep interests in public health in order to fulfil my burning desire. 3 years later,I volunteered as an unpaid intern at small Primary health centre located in a slum which served over 12,000 pregnant, nursing mothers and newborns monthly.In few months,I realized it wasn't a problem peculiar to my aunt alone. She was just 1 out of thousands of mothers that loses their babies during or after birth every year due to avoidable causes

1) Boehringer Ingelheim’s prowess in fast tracking research in emerging markets especially in maternal and child health will be greatly improved with our partnership. SaferMom will co -create substanable partnership and development efforts to help detailed data and research that will help understand key trends, insight, awareness and treatment of mothers with fistula, forced labour, diabetes in pregnancy,pregnancy induced hypertension etc in vulnerable and susceptible population
2)With more networks of doctors, phamacists ,government agencies,community health workers and partners using our SaferMom platform to reach mothers in emerging markets.This will greatly promote existing Boehringer Ingelheim products in Nigeria .
