Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Smart Health Card project is among the first building block which lays the foundation of the eHealth ecosystem. This allows people to adopt a healthy lifestyle through personalized care.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if all my medical data were stored securely and used to design a strategy for me to achieve wellness?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Healthcare is a challenge in developed and developing countries. In spite of the advancements in medical technologies, healthcare continues to pose challenges of affordability, complexity and access across the world. In contrast to healthcare access, mobile access is becoming ubiquitous worldwide. Why not tap in the power of mobile phones to advance healthcare worldwide?

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Smart Health Card project is among the first building block which lays the foundation of the eHealth ecosystem. Electronic systems require a unique identifier to operate. Basically, identifiers can be classified as biometric and non-biometric. Near Field Communication (NFC) technology has been used in the Smart Health Card and gives us an advantage as most NFC enabled devices are connected to Cloud services. A fully operational prototype of the Smart Health Card is currently available and a video demonstrating its function has been uploaded in this competition.

Doctor Assistant app has been published in the World Health Organization (WHO) Compendium of Innovative Health Technologies.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Doctor uses Doctor Assistant app which is our free Electronic Medical Record app available in Google Play. Doctor Assistant has been published in the World Health Organisation (WHO) Compendium of Innovative Health Technologies. During the consultation, the Doctor inputs the patient data in the application. At the end of the consultation, the Doctor uses NFC save to assign this health record to the patient's Smart Health Card. Next time the patient presents again to the Doctor, he/she only has to present the card to load back the health record. This eliminates the need to repeatedly asking the name of the patient and also could be life-saving in case the patient comes in a dire medical emergency.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Mauritius, 70 medical doctors are using our application in their clinical practice. Doctor Assistant make clinical practices go paperless and improve clinical efficiency as well as reduce medical errors by 40%. Doctor Assistant app is already being used by 2500 people worldwide. We plan to roll out the future upgrade which will sync with our server as well as with the Smart Health Card reader. As Doctor Assistant gets nearly 10 new users per week. This is a great market to start our product release.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The potential for growth lies in the simplicity of the tool and also the fact that making a paper based system go paperless and more efficient with minimal investment. Doctor-patient relationship will be enhanced. The Smart Health Card project is in symbiosis with the aim of this competition. According to Intel estimate, there will be around 50 billion intelligent devices online and reports from Cisco predict around 500 million wearable devices will be in use by 2019.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

In many areas of the world, there is much interest over eHealth and mHealth applications. Technologists try to push their tools to developing countries which are not necessarily adapted to the context. Our aim is different. We want to create the starting point for any electronic system who want to scale up. We plan to create an API (Application program Interface) for the Smart Health Card project to interface with other eHealth initiatives.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We have a competitive advantage because our tools are designed by medical professionals who face the discrepancies of the healthcare sector daily. We champion these medical professionals who dare to stand against the current health system and empower them with technological tools to bring disruptive change. Being medical doctors ourselves, we understand better the need of the medical sector and we are always listening and learning from feedbacks of doctors and patients.

Founding Story

I am a Registered Medical Practitioner working as Resident Medical Officer in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Fortis Clinique Darné. I am keen to bring user driven innovation into the healthcare system. Mauritius is unfortunately lacking in the penetration of ICT into Medical practice. But we should see this as an opportunity not a hurdle. I have been thinking about developing an eHealth system since year 2007. Developing software costs money. My colleague, Dr. Beharee Kemley and myself studied computer programming and started coding our own application. This challenge has created Doctor Assistant which is the first medical app coded entirely by medical professionals.

I currently manage the project while Dr. Beharee Kemley manages development team. We have created a team within a software development company that is currently providing support to develop further. We are looking for software developers and open minded talented young people to join us. I am currently studying Global eHealth MSc from the University of Edinburgh. It is an online 3 year course. I am also Guest Moderator in the HealthIT community in the Global Health Delivery project by Harvard University.
CO-CREATION IDEA: Please offer a brief description of how you imagine a win-win partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim to better serve unmet needs in health. (Hint: Please mention the underlying business model envisioned that would make such a partnership sustainable.)

According to the report “Touching Lives through mobile health – Assessment of Global Market Opportunity” by the GMSA/PwC, the worldwide mobile health revenue is expected to reach about USD 23 billion across all stakeholders by 2017. Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) would benefit from data analytics regarding pattern of diseases, medication usage which guide the business predictions. It will be easier to engage patients in clinical trials and collect data for evidence-based medicine. Smart Health Record is a pathway to enter the booming industry of consumer driven wearables. It will empower people to manage their health and promote preventive care. BI logistics and research will have bearing on guiding the project thus exploring new markets.

NEEDS: Based on you response above, please specify which of the following resources, operations or expertise by Boehringer Ingelheim you imagine leveraging to actualize the proposed co-creation opportunity. Please check all that apply. (Hint: while financing is often critical to scale, we are also interested in understanding what other assets or expertise could be leveraged).

Marketing/Communications Support, Human Resources, Legal Support, Technology Expertise, Access to Capital.

EXPLANATION OF NEEDS: Please explain your choices in more detail.

Human resources - we require more talented people to scale the project
Legal Support - To find ways to tackle data governance at per country requirements
Access to capital - We require capital to involve more developers and digital infrastructure sustainability
Marketing - We did not have any proper marketing campaign yet Doctor Assistant app is popular here in Mauritius through word of mouth spread.
Technology - being a small island with limited resources, technology expertise is a critical need.

OFFER: What are the main assets you may contribute in a co-creation partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim that would better serve unmet needs in health?
