Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Education is a universal human right. To provide universal education, we need to steward and improve our commonwealth of open educational resources. The Crowducate platform helps teachers collaborate to create open educational resources.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if everyone had the ability to create and share their own educational experiences?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

There are many online learning environments and open educational resources. Commonly, educators re-create educational resources, where they could simply improve on existing resources instead. This leads to massive duplication of effort, isolation, stagnation, and fragmentation of our open educational commonwealth.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Build a platform that rewards educators for sharing and building on one anothers' efforts. This improves the open educational ecosystem, while keeping teachers engaged.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

A teacher is looking for resources for a course. They are considering writing their own materials or renting materials from a proprietery publisher. The teacher discovers the open educational resources movement, and uses the Crowducate platform to aggregate and remix existing resources.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Other teachers benefit from the improvements to the general learning materials. Students benefit through the improvement of their learning experiences.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We can transform the role of teachers and learners to that of active participants in co-creating educational experiences

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We will seek crowd funding and open-source contributions to evolve the platform. In the long term, we will seek the support of universities and governments who view the open educational movement favorably.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

The Crowducate model differs in that it is participatory, open-source, and fully transparent from the planning, documentation, development, and even the educational resources that are created using the platform.

Founding Story

The seeds of open education and peer-centric learning have been planted by MIT and the Peer to Peer University, as well as the Peeragogy group. A major piece came into place when the founders realized that the open-source software development model could be applied to open educational resource development.
