About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Worldwide 2,7 billion people suffer from a shortage of drinking water for at least one month each year. For 780 million people this situation is permanent. Each year 3,5 million people die due to a lack of clean drinking water. But don’t we have more than enough drinking water in the western world? Yes, we do. That’s why made blue invests in projects in developing countries.

By 1Q2015 Made Blue has realized over 800 million liters of clean drinking water in developing countries, enough to serve over 100.000 people for a year. International brands such as Electrolux, Mövenpick, Veri Soda and Tennant have already joined. From hotels to catering companies and from clothing brands to cleaning: made blue enables companies invest in their brand and contribute to the availability of drinking water elsewhere in the world. Further, through made blue they create added value by strengthening relationships with stakeholders about a crucial topic - water. We offer a distinctive proposition with positive impact, independently verified: every €1 donated results in 5.000 liters of clean water in developing countries.
Impact: How does it Work

Lack of access to safe and adequate water supply and hygienic sanitation is a major issue for the poor and marginalised population of Mongla Upazila in the South of Bangladesh. Therefore, the project aims to create and enhance the access and use on safe water and improved sanitation. Furthermore, local water committees and entrepreneurs will be trained on technologies & skills, but also on social marketing strategies in order to strengthen sustainability. Moreover, environmental hygiene and sanitation are promoted among community members and school children to achieve behavioural change among local people in order to improve their health.

3,600 of School Students get safe water access and ensured their rights; 14,860 of low income community people get safe water access with their ownership; 10 public toilets will be constructed in community; 8 public toilets will be constructed in school; 12 school based rainwater harvesting system will be developed; Capacity of CBO will be developed on participatory monitoring system on hygiene; User friendly BCC materials will be developed; Adolescent girls of the selected school practice menstrual hygiene management.

We work on funding and implementing similar projects with similar goals in Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal, Ghana, Indonesia and India.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Business provide for all funding required and get a independently verified claim on their water footprint (a liter for a liter) in return. By now over 15 multinationals participate ensuring financial stability and sustainability.

Made Blue pioneers the concept of water footprint mirroring. No similar concepts exist to date.

Founding Story

Made Blue was established in 2014 following the request from an international cleaning company to 'offset' its water footprint by investing in clean drinking water projects in developing countries.
