Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Health needs to be protected as a fundamental human right. Guaranteeing public health means giving everyone access to healthcare and a physical mental and intellectual level that enables productivity. Research can provide the means and funds for access to health care and treatments.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if Greece became a centre of research?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Due to the economic crisis the Greek health system is currently under reform and the section of primary health care is almost inactive. Hospitals are obliged to function on lower budgets, they face lack of crucial supplies, are unable to provide free preventive health service to the poor and provide mainly emergency health service. The vast bureaucracy makes things worse. How can we find funds for the suffering Greek health system?

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

An organization should be established having one vision: make Greece a centre of research. It should target to the following. Familiarize healthcare staff in the latest technologies. Help hospital staff overcome bureaucracy. Conduct international Seminars for clinical trials. Create clinical trial procedure documents with information on laws. Conduct campaigns to increase patient recruitment. Make partnerships with relevant NGOs. Register Greece in ECRIN. Create a Greek clinical trial registry for meta-analysis. Act as a solution-maker between stakeholders and government. Encourage laws to oblige hospitals invest profits from research in medical infrastructure. Encourage research on Greek thermal springs by the cosmeceudical industry.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

•Encourage legislative limitations so that the part of the invested money that is withheld by the hospitals (15% of the budget of each clinical trial) is devoted to achieve ‘’health for all the population’’ and to upgrade medical infrastructure. For example it should be devoted for hospital supplies and facilities needed. There should be switch from time consuming paper based methods to all-electronic (perfectionism of e-prescription, electronic patient records, e-booking for patients, telemedicine). In that way examinations will not be held on the spot - the picture of doctors, nurses and patients going upwards and downwards in the hospital to get paper signs will end.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

GAIN IN PUBLIC HEALTH and DEVELOPMENT Better access to healthcare and life saving medicines- devises Access to an A-level and well-equipped scientific potential devoting enough time to each patient and having the know-how of diagnostic and treatment procedures Development of new, safe medicines Use e-clinical techniques 70% Raise the investment of clinical trials in Greece 30% New jobs. Boost hospital’s budgets. Better status of Greek health care system Improve the know-how of doctors Better image and services of the centre where the clinical trial is conducted Young Scientific stays in Greece Self-fulfillment of scientific personnel Extra salaries for doctors, Maintain a competitive CV

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The organization will provide the capacity to initiate clinical research projects in a faster and more effective way all over Greece. Media involvement will play a crucial role in the spread of the initiative. These projects include clinical trials on medicine and medical devices, genetic studies and personalized treatments. Within 10 years thanks to the changes of legislation, the cooperation with all stakeholders and the awareness raised, all hospitals will have the means and the personnel to attract clinical trials. Thus, they will have improvements in the equipment and treatments.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Pharmaceutical companies, CROs, insurance companies, private clinics, universities, researchers and foundations will express interest in financing or participate in the program since they only have short and long - term gains from it.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

According to the European Commission Memo 2014 there is a significant decline of approximately 25% in the number of clinical trials in the EU. There is a trend of increasing clinical trials in areas with emerging economies (Asia, Russia). Greece conducts 1.587 studies, whereas Germany conducts 11.550. Montenegro and Albania constantly gain attraction of new clinical trials. The EU understanding the benefits of research, is creating new facilitating regulation for clinical trials. But we have to be ready to grab the chance: This organization will provide the right means.

Founding Story

In 2009 I was a student at the National School of Public Health attending the master program of “applied public health’’. To take the degree I had to write a dissertation on the theme: The contribution of investment trends in clinical studies to Public Health, Greece 2005-2010 The overall conclusions were related to three main factors: the direction of the Greek research to public health needs, economic benefits of research and the need for a Greek record registration of clinical trials. The result was obvious: research improves public health and economic development. The golden chance was revealed to me: Research is the key to health and economic enhancement.

I welcome partnerships to meet the basic needs of such a vision (national and international NGOs, other changemakers, universities other visionaries of such an idea)
