About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

School drop outs and decline in school attendance has been galvanized by poor sanitary environment and lack of safe water which has spurred diarrhea, and other poor hygiene associated diseases. Open defecation has created a hostile environment and most of the open grounds that were used for education purposes have been boycotted at Malungo primary school.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The innovation will ensure availability of safe clean water by constructing a borehole and providing water treatment chemicals for consumption water. Five sanitary facilities like Ventilated Improved Pit latrines (VIP) will be constructed to eliminate open defecation. Outside every VIP there will be hand a washing place. There will be introduction of health clubs at the school and community sanitation committees to build capacity of of not only school children but also community members. These activities will reduce water related infections like diarrhoea and cholera leading to an increase in school attendance
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The project started in 2011 in Lilongwe an area of Traditional Authority Kalumba at Nkhukwa Primary school. There were high cases of hygiene related challenges diarrhea that contributed to a reduction in school attendance by 38% and an increase in drop out rate at the school. The project saw the introduction of sanitary facilities, water point, and sanitation committees. Through community capacity building activities on hygiene and sanitation there was an improvement in parent's care for the community members and school hygiene improved tremendously amongst school children. Evaluation reports showed a decline in diarrhea cases at the school and surrounding communities. data from the local health center showed no report on diarrhea

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Tremendous achievements at Nkhukwa primary school has compelled us to scale the project up to Malungo primary school and communities that surround the school. the project improves the health livelihood of primary school children there by enhancing school attendance and enrollment rate by more than 50%. Easy access to clean water all the time for drinking, hand washing, classroom cleaning, and other purposes. The School environment cleanliness improves tremendously creating a good environment for education.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The project encourages community ownership of the program starting from the development stage. Community school sanitation committee will be established and it will ensure the establishment of a bank account for borehole and toilet maintenance savings and it will also be responsible for security. Toilets will be constructed with rocks and the borehole will be surrounded with a short height brick fence.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

World Vision is also addressing a similar challenge however our approach heavily involves the community by mobilizing their locally available resources and man power to help in all infrastructure construction. Unlike World vision that target communities our project targets both community and the primary school which leads to formation of sanitation clubs which help in capacity building
