About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In many Nigeria customs, cultures and traditions as well as existing laws and policies that prevent children, women, migrants, minority and the displaced often from owning, retaining, inheriting or getting property or access to land. However, there various created levels of recognition and obligation on the part of States too. These rights are further impeded by the discriminatory attitude of the people based on certain inheritance injunctions, cultural and traditional stigma. There is lack of available resources and awareness through an international instrument as well as formal laws and policies to empower child, women, migrants, Minority and the displaced to have rights to land and property. Development of a formulated an international mandate in a predefined prioritized laws and policy plan activities promoting access to land and property that are derived from a range of international rights and development standards that will be enforceable. As the regulation and protection of these international may take different forms at states and local level. Ironically, endorsing several international right centered mandates which facilitate access to land and property.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Some of these global initiatives creating access to land include the 1976 UN Conference on human Settlements, the 1988 Global Strategy for Shelter to the Year 2000 and the Second United Nations Conference on human Settlements (Habitat II) in 1996, etc these constitute of framework for realising land, property and housing rights. Also, the UN Declaration draft on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, 1994 and September 2007 and other treaties on indigenous people connects land and property rights to indigenous minority people globally. Article 43 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples affirms that the rights therein “constitute the minimum standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of the indigenous peoples of the world” Now that the Declaration has been adopted by the UN General Assembly, negotiation processes between Indigenous Peoples and States to redress land and other rights violations must not fall below the basic, minimum standards contained in this universal human rights instrument. Taken together, they could be seen as a consensus forming part of international expectations and standards the prospects for enhancing access, protection, implementation, facilitate and empowerment of land and property rights in which make up part of a ‘soft law’ creating various levels of acquisition, management, administration, enjoyment and disposition to land and property as a potential for supporting gender, children, minority, migrant rights. These rights arise out of a variety of constitutional and legal principles, international human rights treaties, political declarations, customary practice and international standards which constitute the framework for realizing and enforcing land and housing rights at various levels globally. This project will be carried out through the provision of various available international declarations, covenants and standard etc. to states.

The Story
What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

The defining moment that led to this development of this initiative is centered around series reoccurring conflicts from land and property claims based on indigenous, cultural and government factors and efforts to find lasting solutions to these issues as it affects mainly women, children, minority, migrants and the displaced as it was initiated into an idea when I attended the recent launching of international peace centre, jos, Nigeria. As a participant I was humbled in grief over the presentations by individuals and groups that centered on land and property. I therefore decided to adopt this initiative as an idea to raise awareness through international mandate to resolve series of land and property issues through series of strategies that will identify and support reforms to existing land and property laws, policies and legislative actions. Hence this was a defining moment for me for the idea and establishment of this activity.
