Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The Maasai grazing land was lost through treaties signed between the Maasai Oloibon Mr. Olonana and the British governor Mr. Sternward Donald. The outrageous act has alienated the Maasai community over 10,000 square mile of their prime land. The Maasai leaders tried their level best to challenge the authenticity of the treaties by going to court in 1913 under the famous Ol le Njogo for the plaintiff civil case No 91 of 1912, which the outcome was not favorable the Maasai. As strategy MPIDO- therefore is seeking redress of the land related historical injustices that were done to them in colonial times and after independences by the influential political leaders. By Building indigenous people capacity, first to understand their land rights, secondly to be able engage the policy makers at the grassroots level formulate legislations that will recognize indigenous peoples land tenure system. Supporting the Maasai indigenous community through public interest litigation to secure their land rights. This is one of the unique strategies where MPIDO is engaging legal expertise to represent communities in court for their land complains. The organization have already support 10 communities land cases. This includes ILood-Ariak, Ilkesumeti, Majimoto, Nkampani, and 2 Ilchamus land mark cases one on the environment and another on the representation, Elangata Oltepesi, Mosiro, Namuncha and kidong cases.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Capacity Building. The Maasai community is patriarchal society, where most of decisions were to be made by the man and women to be part of implementation. This system of making decision was conducive to the daily operation of the Maasai society in the early days around 19 century to early 20 century. After new land laws were development by the state without consultation of this community a lot of structures were destroyed were land was registered in the name of one person the man, unlike initially where land was communal owned. This led to more mechanism where the Maasai lost land through land selling. To curb this new mechanism of land lose the organization decided to empower women through training them on the role in land issues for them to be able to stop land lost through land selling. 8 women training were done where more than 400 women were trained. As an outcome of these training 30 families agreed women names appearing in titles deed. Public Interest Litigation- Out of the 10 case supported by MPIDO 6 the decision favors the community. Nkampani land case more that 2 formerly land landless members of the society benefited from the land, ilchamus representation cases gave over 25,000people of ilchamus recognition and the court ordered the formerly Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) to create a constituency or nominate one of the member of this society to represent them selves. Elangata Oltepesi group ranch case was recently finished and 138 members will be allocated land as beneficiaries. Ilkesumeti 141 land less were allocated land. Lobbying and advocacy- For policy change the organization has been using key ministry such as ministry justices, ministry of land and other national NGOs in Kenya to lobby for implementation of public policies that have an impact to the livelihood of the Maasai peoples.
