Liberia is mainly characterized by the consequences of the long and brutal civil war. More than 60% of Liberians are under 25 years old. Infrastructure and social institutions have been destroyed. The lack of infrastructure for waste disposal is a problem. Majority of the region has no systematic waste disposal. The trash contaminates the rainwater and due to the lack of sanitary infrastructure, the risk of infectious diseases is high.

These problems(Unemployment of youth and Poor sanitation), we will focus on waste recycling. production or organic compost for youth urban Multi storey Garden, and the Buying and Selling of recyclables. Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

This project will create a great impact. Like in 2013, we received a grant of $15,000 from ActionAid Liberia to create opportunity for youths and reduce waste in the city of Monrovia. Five slums communities were selected for this project. 25 youths were trained and empowered to engage into waste Recycling Business. Currently, these youths groups are actively doing business in waste Recycling and helping to reduce the volume of waste in the city of Monrovia.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Has of now, these youth groups have been able to Reduce, and Recycle 25 Tons of waste. They have generated the total amount of $6,506.00 from waste Recycling. This solution make a difference in the following ways: Make these young people self-reliance, Make them innovative and creative, Allow the to be in Schools, and also make them think independently(Entrepreneur). This solution is now helping to build Liberia new generation of sustainable entrepreneurs. This solution is helping more youth in Liberia thinking big and are willing to take risk in business.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The main spread strategies moving forward is to be able to take this idea in all regions in Liberia in the next 10 years. To achieve this, Green Cities will work with these youth groups by continuously building their capacity and mentoring them in developing their businesses.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

In the next 5 years, this company will be in the position to Reduce, Recycle 75% of the waste in the City of Monrovia. By doing this, we will be in the position to increase revenue. By increasing our revenue, we will be in the position of expanding the company by increasing the number of youth groups under our Franchise system. This will help to increase our revenue chain for further improvement in purchasing advance equipment for recycling.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In the market of Waste Recycling in Liberia, we do not have competitors. we are the only company in this business currently. Plastic Recycling is a new component of the company. we have indirect competitors in the area of organic compost production. Our indirect competitors are those who are importing chemical fertilizers(pesticide). waste recycling is a complex issues. more people are not willing to venture into it due to the lack of knowledge in this area. Before going in to this business, one need to have better knowledge about how it work and also the market. we have the market.

Founding Story

In 2010, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation decided to support malaria control in some cities in Africa(with Monrovia been part of this project). Funding to suppprt this project in Monrovia was divided into two. some was given to CHF International and huge portion given to the Monrovia City Cooperation.
