Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Ozona project is to help poor farmers in rural villages losing their crops due to irrigation with water polluted with sewage residues to get access to clean water with innovative and cheap purifying process for cultivating healthy crops and also take part in solving water scarcity crisis.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

We decreased farmers loses and eliminate the illegal of irrigation and find new resources for water supply.
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

25,000 farmers in Quesna village are forced to illegally irrigate 10,000 acres of lands using sewage water due to inability of governorate authorities to provide the needed budget to sewage water treatment plants to buy needed amount of chlorine so plants throws half treated sewage water in canals with leads to cultivation of unhealthy crops, huge economic loses for farmers and gastrointestinal, liver and kidney diseases to village inhabitants.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Our project is a way to maximize the benefit of sewage water in Egypt which is estimated at 9 billion cubic meters annually by complete purification to be safely used in agriculture to cultivate healthy crops, decrease farmer’s losses and find new resources for water supply. We as volunteered university students worked with experts from faculties of agriculture, engineering, and medicine. And 8 months of research and experiments, we discovered a way to treat sewage water with ozone which is % cheaper % more efficient than chlorine as it effectively reduces color, odor and BOD levels of sewage water to be used by sewage water treatment plant in Quesna village.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

After passing the experimental phase of the project, we started to launch the application phase by organizing a huge awareness campaign to farmers and residents to inform them that there is cheap, efficient and sustainable technique can be used in purifying canals and sewage water and forcing governorate authorities to solve this disaster. After, we searched for funding sectors to buy ozone generators and successfully convinced Bio Cure Egypt Company to use their generators 3 days a week in the sewage treatment plant in Quesna as an in-kind donation as a part of its social responsibilities and cooperation protocol was signed between them and the holding company for water and waste water.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We organized training workshops to plant workers on how to use those ozone generators to effectively purify sewage water and insure its sustainability. After … months of working, We have been able to purify 400 thousand Cubic meters of sewage water and effectively reducing the BOD of the Quesna canal from 300 to 10 mg/l, which insures the safe irrigation of crops and the maintenance of 10,000 acres of land. We increased 25,000 farmers' revenue by 30 % through cultivating healthy crops and decrease their losses and as a result improve their quality of life and standards of living. And to insure the complete success of the project, We are in actions with farmers to establish their own company (as shareholders) aiming for sustainable purification of sewage water thrown into canals.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We are in action to establish farmers’ own company in order to sustain complete sewage water purification to start working in 2015. Also, we are planning to convince the holding company for water and waste water in Egypt to use ozone purification process instead of chlorine as it cheaper, more efficient and provide new source of water supply as completely purified sewage water can be used in irrigation of edible crops and this can save 9 billion cubic meters of Nile water used for irrigation for other uses. We are planning to switch the process of 10 plants in the next 2 years.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Farmers will establish their company by their own budget as they will be shareholders. For the next phase of switching sewage water treatment process from chlorine to ozone in 10 plants, the holding company for water and waste water will provide half the budget needed and we are working with sponsors and foundations to provide the remaining half.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Others working in treatment of polluted canals used only primary treatment through screens to remove solid particles and sedimentation tanks which is not efficient to reduce BOD of water and must not be used to irrigate edible crops according to Egyptian Code Instructions for usage of treated sewage water. While our project is purifying water completely by passing primary, secondary and tertiary treatment. Also our project is sustainable and participate farmers in solving their problems through establishing their company.

Founding Story

Founding story return to 2007, when 2 university students connected with a worldwide NGO office in Egypt called SIFE “Students In Free Enterprise” and got agreement from its CEO and Menoufia University president to establish a team in our university. And they started to recruit students to help our community and change the world. In 2012 its named changed to be ENACTUS “Entrepreneurial, action, us). We have a specific criterion that each project must achieve which is to consider the relevant economic, social and environmental factors and effectively empowering people in need by applying business and economic concepts and an entrepreneurial approach to improve their quality of life and standard of living. We implemented 20 projects.

We have Board members, academic advisor and business advisory board members but still team members from different fields are the main potential that helps us achieve our goals. Audience: Who have you identified as your customer/recipient groups and do these groups value your solution for different reasons? How do you engage different customer/recipient groups to deliver your solution?

Our target audiences were poor farmers in rural villages who suffered from polluted canals which led to production of diseased crops and huge economic losses to them. We effectively engaged them by organizing awareness campaign and seminars that convinced them to force governorate authorities to solve the problem and enable us to use another more effective process for treating sewage water by ozone generators.

Scaling the solution: How would the prize money and publicity help you to achieve your objectives over the next two years?

Winning the award and the prize money will help us to provide the needed budget for participating with farmers in their company to help them and the needed budget for implementation of second phase of the project in 10 plants to spread the impact. And publicity will give us strength to convince the holding company for water and waste water to implement the second phase.

Experience: Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered
