About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

We have problem with big number of troubled kids and teenager in Padang. But for so long our treatment can not really solve the problem as we just give them formal education and skill. Especially kids with no parents. Like orphan and street kids. No one understand their hard character are built for self defense purpose and may be hiding from their unlucky situation. The perspective here Mental issue only happen to an adult, which called crazy.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The solution that we try to offer here is to address the root of their problem first, by recognizing and address the psychological situation and problem to built strong and independent personality based on their talent and interest. Soon after we address the psychological problem we can built better communication with this kids and find the solution that fit to their problem based on their own direction. For example one girl with traumatic past, made silent as her wall with the cruel world, have more interest on working the handcraft than talking to people. We can offer her handcraft class and starting to communicate with her, during the class to get to know her better and offer her our solution for her problem.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

One girl have seen their parent burned them self on fire. She just 8 YO by then. Left alone with such a trauma, she develop self defenses that no one could understand. Silence and rebellious. As no one understand what she felt, they raised her in a way of normal person with attitude problem. By then she will grow as trouble adult who have no real skill to survive but her anger. As no one understand they need more attention than what normal people have. And on the first even on that orphanage we directly identified these problem and try to provide this girl with the right resources. What we try to do is to change the future, by improving their mentality and psychology, so they can recognized their talent and the way to dream for the future.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The impact that we hope can happen to these girl are, they can handle their trauma and built new perspective on seeing the world. They become confidence and feel secure again. Soon after they feel comfortable with the situation around they can develop them self by develop their interest and skill. So they can dream a better future. From our observation on targeted orphanage with 55 girls, by having 3 wrong nanny 3 troubled kids can escape from orphanage at least once a week. Another 2 kids, lie to the nanny on daily basis for covering her mistake. 6 big girls age 14-16 put pressure to smaller kids group. All these misbehavior was develop as a form of self defenses to survive from outside world pressure. If we can recognized this miss behave as it is, "miss behave" not as a problem, we might come with better education and communication format for this group of girls.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

For now we targeted 1 orphanage from 4 orphanage that built by one local organisation in Padang. If we succeed with the first orphanage, we may suggest the other 3 orphanage to replicate or model with their own resources. And we can consider to expand our work to another group of girls and kids whose not in orphanage like street child in Padang.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

For sustainability of this project, at the beginning will be funded by personal and in kind contribution of the expert that help us for this program. After we started the talent class the girl will develop their entrepreneur skill, based on their talent. For instant, the girl who loved to made a handcraft, will produced the handcraft and learn to sell their work trough our website and will sharing profit with 85% for her and 15% for us .

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

For now street children have the same issue, wrong treatment from the community and parent, and lack of motivation for better future. The approach will slightly different as this kids, most of them still lived with their parents. But then we have same problem in different form only. What we need to do are to also make an approach, not only to the kids but also to their parents and change their mindset, not to used their kids as money maker, and keep them in school to study and allow them to dream.

Founding Story

This project are the third project of our foundation. This project idea came up after we held an reading even on the orphanage. The girl seems really entertained by our event. But, i also found some of them didn't want to talk, low reading ability, even they already on junior high, and 3 of them didnt want to joint the event. Then am asking the orphanage head. The she told each kids story, which she called troubled kids. She was clueless about what was going on. So far the orphanage just give standard "normal" education and punishment for this girls when they in trouble. But they never really learn about what happen. By that time i wonder, they can arise, motivated, independent and behave, if these kids got the right education and treat.

Audience: Who have you identified as your customer/recipient groups and do these groups value your solution for different reasons? How do you engage different customer/recipient groups to deliver your solution?

We targeted the orphanage girls, whose has troubled past, but get wrong treatment and education by people around them, as these people don't understand their miss behave problem.
We already held event in our target group before. We try to make they feel comfortable with our presences. Feel no judgement and will accompanied by expert, like Psychology expert, just to make sure we made good relation. And we will apply this kind of approach to every group that we will made in the future.

Scaling the solution: How would the prize money and publicity help you to achieve your objectives over the next two years?

If we make it, these prize and publication will help us to develop more activity to increase the capacity and skill of these girl. Can provide more material skill and teacher for them. And for sure we can expand our work, to another group of people. With the publication we may attracted and inspired more people to joint us, either helping us or develop their own program.

Experience: Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered

We've been held a book discussion group in orphanage and last December 2013 we held an even and competition for kids and teenager. Focusing on re introduced the traditional value of our tribe to young generation. Our activity so far, always based on our culture as our culture have strong matrimonial tradition where woman have prominent position as manager of the house. Our tradition allow women to learn and to be a social leader.
