Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

ThaiBiomass aims to create new source of fuel wood supply replacing fossil fuels, while providing environmental and social benefits by reducing air pollution, enhancing local economies through job creation and giving poor farmers another form of income from wood residues and sustainable energy crop.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

3 Challenges ThaiBiomass Addressing • Climate changes are caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the conversion of land for agriculture. • Poor farmers getting poorer, Small-holder farmer has been the mainstay of the Thai economy. However, 1 out of 5 earn less than $1 per day and 80% are in debt. • Local communities cannot take control of their economic future because of limited access to knowledge and market.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

ThaiBiomass creates new sources of wood fuel supply replacing fossil fuels from two sources: 1) local wood residues and 2) sustainable agriculture short-rotation crops of Leucaena. This project’s benefits to sustain fuels supply, reduce air pollution, and develop community well-being by enhancing farmer’s income from energy crops advantages • Can grow in degraded land and drought without fertilizer and pesticide • Continue supply wood every year without re-planting in 20 years • Create more incomes from high protein leaves for animal feed and from food crops between rows We also educate local community to become small-scale biomass producer by creating value-added on raw materials and providing them with access to domestic and global market.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

By using fuel wood, it can give several benefits – Economic, Environmental, and Social. For example, the animal feed mill company (let’s call AF) need fuels for production. AF use coal as fuels for several years. Last year, AF could not find enough coal ,and the price was going up due to limited resources. Also, surrounding neighborhood complained about affected from air pollution. AF decided to use fuel wood, it is environmental friendly, yet economical price. Fuel wood comes from wood residues and energy crops from farmer’s communities (let’s call CO). CO is partnering with ThaiBiomass to supply fuel wood. CO's community can increase income up to 40%. CO is a role model for others communities to bring benefits back to society.
ความยั่งยืน

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In Thailand, few companies and own-operated family business are in the market. Thus, no dominant players are existing. Most notable among them are listed below; • Shaiyo Triple A Group is a big biomass power player who mainly uses Eucalyptus residue as feedstock. • Asiabiomass is a big fuel wood trader in Thailand that expands fuel wood business from coal business. • Other 58 micro and small fuel wood producers They differ from ThaiBiomass in that they do not provide knowledge/counseling on how to add value to their raw materials and they do not collaborate with communities to give farmers the opportunity to create another form of income from wood residue and sustainable short-rotation energy crops.

วิธีการแก้ไขปัญหา
Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

My father comes from a farmer’s family in remote area of Thailand. We are growing agriculture crops for many generations. And I, myself, have seen vicious cycle of farmers' poverty from unfair treatment, degraded land and drought.
ThaiBiomass get inspired from the story of Ms. Toom, farmer in Lopburi area. She started with 50 acres of sugarcane, making significant investments every year with less profit return from unfairly treated. In 2005, a severe drought killed her entire crops. She was in the debt. After she decided to grow energy crop of Leucaena. All her debt could paid off.
Seeing her life transform, that was the moment that launched me into developing ThaiBiomass, to spread these solutions nationwide and change for a better.

Select Sector(s): To which of Unilever's categories of sustainability does your solution apply?

Greenhouse Gases, Waste, Sustainable Agriculture, Smallholder Farmers, Supply Chain Micro-entrepreneurs.

Measurable Impact
Audience: Who have you identified as your customers/recipients and why? How will you get your solution to them or engage them in your initiative?

Our customers are electrical power plants, industrial energy market, commercial and residential heating and animal feed mills industry around the world. We have sale teams to introduce our economical, reliable and sustainable fuel by using cold call, visit, sample trial and event.
Our recipients are farmers, communities enterprise, cooperatives. We contact through the communities' network, partners and NGO. We organize the road show in local area, to increase the awareness of the wood biomass benefits.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date and expected impact in the future?

Since 2011, ThaiBiomass has triple bottom line impacts;
• $0.3 million saved in fuel cost, economical fuel compared to fossil fuels for our customers
• ~1,000 tonnes carbon emission, energy farms have reduced
• ~284,700lbs sulpur dioxide and nitrogen oxide ~131,400 lbs, significant amounts of greenhouse gases and pollution, from replacing coal use, have reduced
• Over 200 families gained additional income and had better social well-being
In the next 2 years, we expect to grow 1,642 acres of Leucaena plantation
• ~26,945.22 tonnes reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂)/yr
• ~150 tonnes return the nutrient to soil/yr
• More than 7,935 tonnes replaced coal use/yr, which will reduce Sulfur dioxide (SOx) ~179,712 lbs/yr and Nitrogen oxides (NOx) ~82,944 lbs/yr
• 40% enhance farmer’s income of over 1,000 farmers' families
• 5 people local employment increase per small-scale biomass production

Growth, Finance & Leadership
Scaling the Solution: How do you intend to scale your activities over the next two years (e.g., reach new markets, diversify solutions, etc.)? What will make this possible?

With funding, it help us to increase our factory production capacity from small of 1,400 metric tons per month to large-scale of 5,000 metric tons per month supporting the tremendously growth demand in domestic and global. And with publicity, there is potential to replicate current successful location of energy crops contract farming from 1 family to 100 families, 1 cooperative to 5 cooperatives to other locations and scale up capacity of multi-location production in Thailand and throughout South East Asia.
We also plan to increase our production staffs from 4 to 33 staffs and partner with the research and development organization of energy crops, and technology manufacturing company.

Financial Sustainability: What is your business model to ensure financial sustainability?

• Profitability, we can generate attractive return for both farmers and company while serve customers sustainable fuel wood with economical price.
• Scalability, we can scale up this project nationwide.
• Sustainability, forward contract farming, land development, better farmer’s income, community well-being and air pollution reduction make this project sustainable.
• Repeatability, we can repeat in revenue as fuel wood is a consumable energy.

Experience: Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered.

I am passionately committed to become a social entrepreneur and bring rural communities out of poverty. I have extensive experiences in rural communities’ development and over 10 years of experience in agribusiness and farm management. My previous work was involved with expertise in biomass market. Now, I am pursuing a master degree in Social Entrepreneurship.
With all acquired skill, I can overcome obstacles and run ThaiBiomass into success.
