Buzz for Bees

NAME | James

GRADE | Kindergarten

LOCATION | Milford, Connecticut

James, Kindergarten, of Milford, Connecticut leads “Buzz for Bees,” a local environmental effort to grow pollinator plants across the community to support a dwindling bee population, raise awareness about biodiversity, and nurture local ecosystems.

After observing struggling bees on the ground throughout his neighborhood, James has taken it upon himself to learn more about the survival needs of bees and their important role in the local ecosystem. Now, the kindergartener is starting a community effort to introduce more pollinator plants to the area and establish an environment where bees and flowers will flourish together. With the support of his family, James is introducing this initiative to classmates and neighbors to raise awareness and urge others to participate in the effort to plant more pollinators.

I sees bees on the ground and ask my mom if they are sleeping.  She said they are alive, but they need food.  I ask my mom what bees eat and she says nectar from flowers.  But I do not see flowers when we go for walks, so where is the food for bees?

I learned about bees at school.  I know bees help flowers grow and flowers help bees grow.

With my moms help, I want to plant flowers in the ground.  When the snow is gone, I want to buy plants to grow and watch the bees come home.

Mom said that we can give our neighbors flowers too.  Maybe bees will go to their houses too.

I want to plant flowers at school too.

Read the book, The Honeybee

We can look for bees.

Ask our neighbors who has flowers.

See who wants a flower.

Buy flowers to plant in the ground.

Watch and see if bees come to eat the nectar.

My mom, dad and sister are on my team.  My mom will help me share flowers with our neighbors.  My mom will show me pictures of bees to draw and share at school.
