Kara escaped genocide in her native Gutemala as a young child and is now seizing the opportunity to develop a citizen-based information sharing platform throughout Central America, where democacy is gradually beginning to emerge. Built on mobile phone networks and internet “hub” sites, Kara’s Habla model has rapidly spread through the region, as grassroots demand for a reliable source of information has surged.

HablaCentro is a “regional pulse meter,” a collection of citizen news hubs where local communities can share news and discussions in Spanish using cellphones. Hubs consist of an editor, community organizer, and technologist, maintaining the hub, editing and training contributors to increase participation and ownership by the local community.
