We are a team of two, Tom Gill and Carla Powell, and in the last three years we have set up the UK charity and Ugandan NGO called East African Playgrounds. We have built 12 playgrounds, recruited over 70 UK volunteers, created a Ugandan team of playground builders, started a welding apprenticeship and initiated a sports coaching and skills transfer program. In 2012 we will be doubling our efforts by building 12 playgrounds running 9 sports programs, increasing our Ugandan team and taking over 80 volunteers out to Uganda. Before we started doing all of this Tom travelled around the world for 4 years and then settled down to a life of 6 months in Africa and 6 months in University doing a Social Policy degree whilst driving a bus on night shifts to pay for it all. Carla join in on the 6 months in Africa and 6 months in University finishing her degree in Childhood, Education and Culture whilst running weekend volunteering projects for disadvantages children and kids with learning difficulties in Leeds.
