WaleedShawky Founder of Medicine For All Waleed has always been an active member of his community, as a student, he was involved in school journalism and his wall magazine won the school award. In Cairo University, school of Pharmacy, Waleed was a member of a student union committee and in his senior year he was elected to be the Student Union President. After graduation, Waleed started his own private pharmacy in Cairo, that’s where he started working on the ground and interacting with customers, he got to realize how many people cannot afford medicine prices. Waleed had two turning points that made him start his initiative ‘Medicine for All’, the first is when he was conducting his Ramadan night prayers in a mosque where he found a room packed of donated medicine that the mosque board did not know how to make use of and just stored it. He thought of all these people he met every day that could not afford it.The other turning point was when he attended a lecture about volunteerism and how individuals with innovative ideas can bring change to their societies. It was when he linked between the two incidents; he started designing the whole idea in his head and decided to start working on saving medicine. In 2005 he approached “El Boraq”, a local small NGO located in Cairo, with the idea of providing / approaching families with this medicine. Then in 2006 – 2010, Waleedstarted to get medicine at cost for “Al Boraq” for chronic diseases. By 2013, Waleedbecame an Ashoka Fellow with his organizationmedicine for all that focuses on the two projects: El khir pharmacy and Micro health insurance. With all his activities with students, medical caravans, drug companies, and CSOs, Waleed is now considered an inspiring model for Pharmacy students and his venture is considered to be the hope for a lot of Egyptian patients who once believed there was no way to get the medicine they needed.
