Rain, Rain You Can Stay

NAME | Daniela

GRADE | 2

LOCATION | Denton, Texas

Daniela, 2nd grade, of Denton, Texas is establishing a toy and game collection program to improve school recess during rainy days, ensure enriching, screen-free activities, and encourage the development of social and language skills.

For Daniela, rainy days bring about a routine tension at recess where students don’t have the resources to entertain themselves inside and educators are trying their best to keep students off electronics. In response, Daniela is working with her second-grade dual language class to coordinate a toy and game drive to supply her classmates with the proper resources to offer students an enriching and entertaining recess period, when running around outside isn’t an option.

There are many days that we have to stay inside during recess because it is rainy or cold. The teachers don't want us to use computers and want us to get active and play but they don't have very many games and toys unless they buy them themselves and teachers do not make very much money. We need to find a way to help them get games so it is more fun for us and we can be active or use our imaginations. We like to draw but want to do other things, too.

Our solution is to bring in games and toys that we do not use very much so that we can share them with our classmates who have never played with them. If almost everyone brought at least one toy or game, we would have so much more to play with and it would help clean out our closets which would make mom happy, too. And maybe other classes and grade levels would think this is a good idea and they can do it, too.

We would each go home and look through our toys and think about what we liked but no longer play with. We would ask our parents if we can bring them to school to donate.

We could also go on the school's live announcements, after asking permission from administration, to sell the idea to the rest of the school in case they also have the same problem. That way, others can participate.

We could also create flyers to advertise the idea in case people forget and create a flyer to send home to families so they know why we want to do this.

We could also maybe ask local stores or organizations to donate some toys.

The other members of my team are my classmates and our dual language teacher.
